Trailer Plug(s) Relocation Project

I never liked the way the factory trailer plugs were attached to the side of the receiver hitch. Looks like an afterthought on a cheap bracket.

The other day I was driving down the road and noticed how a Chevy Silverado had the plugs in the bumper next to the license plate. I thought.... I can do that to mine.

So I checked under the bumper and there was room. I removed the bracket and plug. Used it for a template.

Cut out the plastic with a Dremel and assorted bits.

Then installed the plug and attached it's wiring.

I like it much better now.

Nicely done! I may have to steal that mod idea.

My other motivation for doing this mod was to clear up the area to the sides of the receiver for reverse lights.

With that plug and bracket out of the way, I plan to add some incognito, low profile, barely noticeable when it's off..... lighting back there.

Now just have to figure out what I'm going to use lol

Good work. I did similar on my 03, but eliminated the license plate light on that side, and put the plug in its place. A lot easier to use there too!

If I had it to do over..... I might go that route instead.

One light on the plate is plenty.

You could enlarge the light hole and install the trailer plug horizontally instead of vertical like I did.

Either way is better than the factory setup!

That is a great idea. My plug always gets bent from backing into snow piles while plowing. That would put it in a nice protected spot and keep the trailer wire higher off the ground when towing.

Nice Idea! Got me thinking about a spring on the license plate ( 60s & early 70s GM cars) and mounting behind it

Looks good. How much does the plug block the light from the left license plate light?

Not much. About half of the first letter doesn't get direct light from the left light. The right light does a suitable job of filling in the rest though.

Looks great and looking forward to doing the same to mine! Only concern I can think of is possible wiring harness damage from driving away from a trailer with the cord connected. The plastic might not resist enough to break the connection and the harness will be pulled. Never had that happen, but I think someone has probably done that at sometime. You can't idiot proof everything, but a strain relief might help. I have let people borrow my truck for towing. Thanks for sharing!
