My new cab is almost completely disassembled and the dash is out of my old cab. New cab needs a windshield. I'm going to use a Carlite Super Duty windshield and found some 3M urethane adhesives. Has anyone ever changed their own glass before? Any tips or pointers?
Is a professional installer really that expensive? I'm all for doing things yourself, but this is one I would hand off to the pro's. It would be too easy to make a tiny mistake that leads to a leak down the road. That could cause major headaches. Also, I don't know for sure that it is the case with our trucks, but many modern vehicles actually rely on the windshield as a structural member, for its crash worthiness. Yes, it will break in a crash, but it reinforces the cab just long enough, and in just the right ways, to be part of the designed in crumple zone. If the windshield is not installed correctly, or with the right adhesives, it can affect occupant safety in a crash. Seriously.... It seems strange, but its true, at least for some vehicles.
Plus, if you drop or break it on install, its on you. If a pro does it, they have to buy you a new one.
I had to have a new windshield put in mine, i think it was 150 bucks total to have it brought to my house and installed. Thats one task i wouldnt tackle on my own.
Insurance coverages vary. With Geico, i have a zero deductible on my glass, so replacements are absolutely free. The "upgrade" from a $100 deductible to a zero deductible for me only costs about $16 per year per vehicle in additional premiums... well worth it! To boot, I recently had an "upgraded" Soundscreen installed in my truck, and Geico still covered 100%.
I have liability only. Full coverage in Maryland in very expensive. I called Safelite and they quoted me $274 to remove glass from one truck and install new glass in the other. My local Safelite dealer quoted me $240 for the glass alone....
OK So I decided to let Safelite do the glass. He came out this am, beautiful piece of Carlite "Super Duty" OEM glass with one little problem....
It had a film of sorts on it. You couldn't see it laying down, but if you tilted it up it was like swirl marks. He said he could feel it in the glass and he decided that since I was doing so much work to this truck he wanted it to be perfect for me. He's coming back Wednesday.....
Glad he didn't just put a bad piece of glass in it, D. I had mine replaced several years ago and had it "upgraded" to the one with the Superduty logo at the top. Cost my insurance an extra $100, didn't cost me a dime though. I like it.

IKR?? They came out again this AM with another piece and same problem. They are going to buy a piece from a competitor ( their words) to see if it has the same problem. I was hoping to get this done today.....
