Well a rock hit the front sindshield and created a 1.5 inch spider print.
It didnt go all the way thru, so I think it might be fixable by a shop, maybe $100
I am looking at a new windshield for $325- but havent gotten any answers on shading or the bar on top. (I read there is a green shading over the whole windshield and blue sun band on top.)
I have heard there is a new accustical windshield for the 2007 expeditions, is this available for mine 2003 (Ill call ford)
Would you get the new one or fix existing, any comments are appreciated
given the tendency of these things to have windshield leaks, if yours isn't leaking now, I'd try to fix it if possible before replacing it.
I've driven mine for two years with a crack top-to-bottom on the passenger side because I don't want to deal with the possibility of a shoddy install causing a leak on the GEM.
I have a crack in the windsheild from the very bottom to up about 8 inches on the driver side. Caused by a rock that hit the truck on a trip to Mississippi. I too am concerned about possible leaks that may develop after a new windshield install.
They sell some epoxy kits that work for windshields that may be able to fill the spider cracks. I did it once on my old windshield and it worked great. Of course a couple of months later, debris from an accident on the other side of the parkway decided to invite itself halfway into my upper windshield. Luckily it never made it all the way thru, and i got a new one installed.
How long has it been cracked? If it isn't repaired properly soon it could turn into a bigger crack. If it gets bigger than 6" your insurance should cover most of it, I'm getting a new one Monday for $50. I hear that if it's bigger than a quarter it is unrepairable, not sure what all determines this.
If you decide on a new one, call a high end (BMW, Mercedes and up) body shop for a recommendation on a company. They will most likely use someone who knows what they are doing and stands by their work.
Pilkington (LOF), PPG, Carlite or Guardian are supposedly decent quality glass brands (according to a post in a thread a while back anyway). Beware of cheap no-name glass.
Thanks all for such responces. I looked into the fix and am not happy...its larger than a quarter! and Im to drive to Florida in April.
Its been three days and it hasnt spread, it is so round its almost funny. I covered it with tape to keep dirt out but it hasnt been working good since the recent snow/rain (truck is to big for garage)
Iam going to 89glass @ lunch to see what they say?? Ill look into carlite and others before hand - thanks for the tip!
Tried to contact two Ford dealers since and havent gotten an answer yet.
Just to clarify, PPG, Carlite and the others are the actual brands of glass, not installation companies. I wasn't sure if that came across clearly.
I wouldn't hold my breath waiting on a response from a dealer about the '07 windshield.
If it's the type I'm thinking of, the glass will be a little thicker and made of layers. If I had to guess, even if the outline is the exact same, I would say it wouldn't work. You never know though. Unless there is a standard windshield also available and you can cross reference part #'s to older trucks, it would probably be a hands-on determination.
well the dealer responded, they send it out to a glass shop maybe two days
OEM is a PPG for all Ford/Chevy (they stated) same price as the most quotes
aftermarket no make on windshield but the price is $100 less... maybe nomane..
I keep you updated esp if I find anything different.
