Overheated auto trans

Hey y'all, I have a 95' F150 auto straight 6. It's my daily driver, and I love it. Today sitting in Houston traffic I think I got the tranny too hot. I had been sitting in stop and go traffic for roughly 45 minutes. The kind of traffic where you barely let your foot off the brake every 5 minutes or so..anyways, I noticed the truck would not pull like usual so I started to make my way to the shoulder. By the time I got over the truck would barely move. Got out, trans fluid leaking all over the ground. Had a buddy come get me with a trailer. I filled up the trans with ATF and drove it onto the trailer, and actually felt somewhat strong. But it was still leaking pretty bad. My plan is to probably pull the trans and inspect the converter. I don't think any clutches are damaged seeing as how I was barely moving or working the truck, but I could be wrong. I'm thinking maybe converter seal or something? Any opinions would be approciated!

It is probably the torque converter hub seal.

If it's an E4OD that's not surprising they seem run on the edge of disaster temp wise all the time for some reason. I suggest you blow out the stock oil cooler lines with compressed air to make sure they aren't plugged and then install the largest aftermarket fan driven oil cooler you can find.

Good to know it's a common problem I guess. I'm gonna tear into it tomorow and find out where it's leaking from. I'm suspecting an input shaft seal or something of that sort. I'll keep y'all posted. Thanks for the help

Sorry to hear what happened. I went through that more then once years ago. The E4OD transmission in my truck has been out about 10 times or so for repairs do to the Dallas Tx. traffic and hotrodding it around over the years. This is what I did to what seems to solve my issue. Other then finding some one that knows what the heck their doing on rebuilding the transmission right.

I upgraded to a Haydens transmission cooler that helped keep it cooler and operating normally going by my transmission gauge.. Recently I upgraded to the B&M because the Haydens was not keeping up with the True Duel exhaust I got.

The Largest B&M super cooler w/ the stock 2 core radiator combo works excellent.

The parts listed below are what would be needed... There are other ways this is just what I did.

Perma-Cool Hose Barb Fittings 15155 - Free Shipping on Orders Over $99 at Summit Racing
B&M SuperCooler Oil Coolers 70274 - Free Shipping on Orders Over $99 at Summit Racing
Hayden Transmission Cooler Hoses 125 - Free Shipping on Orders Over $99 at Summit Racing

Hose clamps and a custom built bracket to mount it. I would not recommend the push through plastic type strap. The bracket I made was out of, "1" Steel Perforated Tubing." Stainless steel bolts, lock nuts, and washers that I found at the local store. I used a Angle Grinder and cut four pieces. Two, that ran the length across the front of the radiator which had to be notched for the hood release mounting bracket support bar. Also, two more bars that ran the height of the radiator." Then drilled holes, painted the holes so it would not rust, drilled bigger holes in the oil cooler mounting tabs to fit the size of the bolts I was using and mounted every thing down.

I also wrapped the exhaust pipes going along side the transmission with:

Thermo-Tec Clamp-On Pipe Heat Shields 11630 - Free Shipping on Orders Over $99 at Summit Racing

I also wrapped the transmission lines that are going close to the exhaust with: Thermo-Tec Thermo-Shield Tape 13997 - Free Shipping on Orders Over $99 at Summit Racing

I also use a bigger Transmission pan that holds about 6-7 more qts. of oil then the factory.

I use Valvoline High Mileage ATF Full Synthetic.

Thanks for the input man, your set up sounds pretty nice. Once I get this thing back on the road I'm definitely going to look into an external trans cooler. I really think that would solve my problems here. I just got the truck off my trailer and started looking at it. It seems to have stopped leaking and has good power, I need to go drive it to make sure. But I think it just got too hot, I just hope it didn't wipe out a seal in the process. I'd rather not have to pull this transmission
