Transmission Cooler

I am looking to upgrade the stock transmission cooler on my F250 to a 6.0 cooler. I am looking for suggestion (link and price) on where to buy. I also understand there need to be some changes because of hose sizes? Any links to instructions? If there is enough info added to this thread maybe a sticky for ease of finding information in the future.

$294 here http://parts.autonationfordwhitebear...5c3z-7a095-ca/
$323 here http://www.riffraffdiesel.com/6-0l-t...cooler-26-row/
Rockauto has a Dorman for 140 and another type for 180

I'll add links to other threads that hold info.

Just changed mine out a week ago. Be sure to check out Woods-&-Things site in the tech folder. One note when cutting the factory rubber hoses be advised they are steel reinforced, I had to use a hacksaw blade. Also order the two longer bolts from Ford Part # N808441-S439 for the two bottom rubber grommets they are about $2.00 for both. One other suggestion is to order the 3/8 in X 1/2 in barbed fitting in advance as no one seemed to have in stock locally. Not a hard job at all. Good luck

Which cooler did you go with? Did you also add the filter?

Is there anything wrong with the Dorman brand?

I went with the Ford 26 row cooler from Autonation White Bear Lake. I have not as of this week added the extra filter. I have no recommendation toward the Dorman units, they may be fine for all I know. My experience over the many years is summed up in the following statement "The bitterness of poor performance will linger longer than the sweetness of a low price." Just saying.

When it comes to things like this, there is a reason why I opted for the cast iron IH water pump instead of the Dorman. I would bite the bullet and get the OEM one from RiffRaff or AutoNation. This way you can have peace of mind and confidence that it will last for years to come.

one way to overcome the hose size is to install the
Derale 25719 Fluid Control Thermostat Kit at amazon.. it the larger passages model and you can get regular brass barbed fitting 2 for 3/8 to connect to existing and 2 for 1/2 to new cooler.

I got one from ebay or go to local junk yard.. mine had almost new looking fluid dripping out of it. I also plan to install magnefine? filter on side coming back to trans after the cooler to make sure.

Here are a few writes up/articles on it..

A fairly straight forward procedure. I couldn't find the 3/8 to 1/2 hose bards locally and didn't want to wait or pay 10 bucks of shipping on 3 dollars worth of fittings. I went to a local hardware store, got a 3/8 hose barb x 3/8" female npt fitting and a 1/2 hose barb x 3/8 male npt fitting, hit them with some thread sealant and screwed them together... haven't had a leak in 4+ years.

I picked up my cooler used and did a cooler line flush, which I had to do anyways, after installed it. Then I threw a magnafine downstream just to be safe. No issues yet.

What years do I need to use when looking for a 6.0 cooler? If I just use 1999 they all want to list the stock cooler which is not what I want.
Is the 26 row good enough or should I get the 30? row?

I think the earliest coolers were 25 row but there aren't many of them floating around. Either the 26 or 31 row will work fine, I believe per Mark K the 31 and 26 row are designed to provide the same amount of cooling capacity so I would go with whatever one is cheaper. I believe mine came off a 2005 F350 dump body.

The "6.0" is a reference to the transmission cooler that came during the 2003.5 model year that also accompanied the 6.0L engine. The 26 row will be sufficient.

If you have a stock cooler like what I had it will be a nine row cooler.

Yeah mine currently is the 9 row cooler. I am trying to upgrade for better cooling while towing a fifth wheel.

There is a 26 row at the used parts house over by me. They want $45 for it. That's where I got mine and no issues at all. A&A Parts in Kennedale, Texas.
