I think the best sugar is a byproduct of other stuff. Like bread and potatoes. If you lead a very active life, you can eat as much as you want. It is the imbalance that gets one in trouble. ( I got really fat due to a cubicle type job).
Carpe_diem,

What you say about sugar, and starches (bread, pasta, potatoes,
etc.) is true, unless you have diabetes.

Very true, when my blood sugar jumped up to around 280, a can of pop with sugar would be just as effective as a sleeping pill.

After dropping the high carb diet, I haven't seen my sugars over 160 for the last few years. I never have had a sweet tooth, my problems are chips and freedom fries.

Sugar is out for me - totally. My body does not need it, nor does it function correctly with it. I did a lot of research concerning sugar, and was relieved to discover that you really do not need ANY refined sugars at all. NONE! If it says sucrose, you don't need it.

I do not consume glucose, sucrose or refined fructose. I do eat fruit, I do eat bread, so long as I bake it, and in answer to dtpatt, YES, I do still eat steak. I eat as much as I want, which is considerably less than last year. Then I would happily eat a 32 oz steak, and still want more. Now, I am very satisfied with 8 oz. I no longer live a sedentary lifestyle, I am working out every day, running on my tread mill a number of times daily, and keeping aerobic quality exercise for repeated short periods daily.

I am not running out of energy, I am not fainting, and I am not consuming ANY processed foods. I feel great.

My dinner tonight consisted of: Spring greans with herbs, tuna, anchovy, blue cheese, asparagus stalks, artichoke, and chopped green beans, followed by goat yogurt with half a peach. I had one slice of bread with it, and a pint of water. It was delicious.

congrats! way to go. keep up the good work.

I've lost 12 pounds since christmas, but it is sort of not right for me. I'm trying to get ripped for my wedding later this year and I was taking a lot of dietary supplements and stuff for bodybuilders (not steroids) and the stuff made me retain LOTS of water. Now that I am off the stuff and going "natural" I've noticed a big difference in what I can do in the gym.

The key I found to getting your body to look the way you want it to look is a lot of hard work, a diet that is neither lax nor rigid but ...well I think I'm trying to say moderation is the key.

again, keep up the good work!

To show how big I used to be, compared with now...

This is a coat I bought new in November, for my spell in North Dakota - it was a tight fit, that was just about wearable - they had not got a 5x, so I got the 4 x.....

We were not terribly cramped in there, just cosy.

Keep it up Theo. You'll be able to enjoy life to it's fullest.

It's worth overy bit of struggle, being overweight and diabetic is deadly concoction.

My brother is diabetic and I watch him struggle with it every day of his life, so I know how tough it can be. He's not fighting wait, but it's hard nonetheless.

Good luck, don't give up the fight,

Waxy

WOW, sounds like me!

What a pic!

I was nowhere near this bad -- primarily because I was tall with all that weight but still. Big difference.

I threw out the giant sized trousers I wore - I wish I'd Kept them - that would look like one of those diet adverts, now and then. I have no pride left, so I can admit that I have lost a total of 27 inches off my waist. Seeing me in the trousers I used to get red welts round my middle from is amazing - I cannot even push my tummy out to reach. I have every intention of keeping up this onslaught on my obesity. Prior to being crippled in 1994 and spending 2½ years in a power wheelchair, I was very fit, and intend to get back to that condition soon. I am more than half way there, so I am enthusiastic about the potential outcome. I intend to aim my creative talents at writing a short book about what I did to get this result, as I did not follow any specific diet for long, I mixed a few, and did an tremendous amount of research, to give me a better idea of how to achieve the least damaging losses. I keep a real close eye on my vitals and bloodwork, so monitor progress accurately. I think such a book would be a great help to persons who realize that fat is not cool.

That really is a great pic!!

I still can't believe that you have lost that much weight. I can definitely vouch that there was plenty of room with both of us in the jacket.
