I own a 1989 F150 that I use for pulling a camper. I am looking for a little more pulling power. I am thinking of adding a Diablo Powerchip and maybe a K & N FIPK kit. What would give the most bang for the buck????? Would I be better off adding dual exhaust instead. I am kind of limited on funds and was wondering what would be the best upgrade to do first?????
I would do the K&N filter, dual exhaust, and headers.
I wouldn’t mess with a chip unless you must have one, you will have to run premium gas all the time.
I would also think about an electric fan to free up some HP.
A MSD 6a, and MSD coil will also help with the towing also.
The first mods to do are exhaust, and K&N filter. Then what ever else that fits your budget.
I would get a K&N replacement filter and then do the "air box mod" I recently did this on my truck and it helped a ton. It feels like Picked up an honest 10-15 hp. I think most of the improvement was in the "airbox mod". Its very easy to do, and only takes 10 minutes. IF you need directions on how to do the airbox mod let me know...The best part is: it only costs $50 compared to the FIPK $150?? and with the same results.
Hey is the mod your talking about, where you flip the cover on the air box, and then lay the filer on top?
I suggest you only do this if you can secure the filter to the top of the box.
I have an 89 f150 w/a 302 also. I thought about adding dual exhaust where I have only single exhaust now. Since I have 1 O2 sensor in one side, would I have to add another and have the computer reprogrammed to work with two or just make it duals and leave one O2 sensor on it and let it go?
What you do it basically remove the lower portion of the box, and cut it about 1 1/2 inches below where the filter sits. bolt the remaining portion back on and your done.It takes 10 minutes. You should really have a k&N for this, but it will work with a paper filter as well.
I havn't done the ram air part yet. You'll love the sound at WOT
arms, you would have to use on sensor in one bank. there is no way to reprogram an eec4 speed density system to read two oxygen sensore. it should be fine in one side anyhow.
