I am getting close to putting my old 215 back in my old F100. The last time I looked at the engine w/o the oil pan on was many years ago. (I did the engine first... and the bodywork has absorbed all my time since then.) My recollection is that there are currently no thin sheet steel lock washers over the connecting rod nuts at the moment. I remember that the rods had these washers at one time. I must have lost them the last time that I refreshed the motor. Anyway, what is the feeling on this forum regarding these washers? I have looked for replacements but haven't found any. I thought that maybe a 223 would have something similar, but internet searches have not helped me. Comments? Anyone know where I can go looking for these? For those not familiar with this washer type: it's neither split ring or star, but rather a thin sheet metal that fits over the end of the nut and has ears that are get bent down to keep the nut from moving with respect to the rod.
If you mean the thin, stamped steel "PAL nuts" that go on after the real nut, you don't need them. Van Pelt sells them if they give you comfort, if they are the same 3/8"-Fine as the V8's. On the V8's, most people just toss them or use a dab of Red Loctite on the big nuts. My engine doesn't have either and is running fine. The stretch in the bolts is what holds things from moving.
Edit: The ones on V8's don't get bent over, they just tighten against the main nut. The '52 manual shows the 215 using the same p/n as the V8's
