Clutch install problem

I decided to try to put a clutch in my stock 1953 ford truck. I had my old clutch rebuilt and reinstalled it. I couldn't get the throw out bearing to engage the pressure plate. The forked rod that pushes the throw out bearing would hit the bell housing before it would touch the pressure plate. I removed the transmission again and the three bolts in the fingers of the pressure plate were tightened all the way down. I'm guessing the shop that rebuilt the clutch did that? Is that the normal way for those bolts to be or are they supposed to be backed out a little? I backed them out a couple of turns and I can feel the throw out bearing engaging the pressure plate now. This is my first attempt at changing a clutch so I might have done something wrong? Any ideas or input is appreciated. Thanks!

Are you sure you have the fork installed correctly? Your pressure plate finger bolts should have been adjusted by the clutch shop. They are supposed to be set to a specific height, and even. If the trans is out now, I'd be inclined to take the PP back and ask them to adjust it to specs.

I'm pretty sure I have the fork installed correctly. I think it will only go one way as it connects to the fulcrum so it can pivot? Can it be installed backwards?

I don't think it could be backwards, but is it completely seated on the fulcrum? Was the fulcrum worn?

Well it is fixed!! Had to pull the transmission back out and back the bolts on the fingers of the pressure plate off about half way. Its back one road now. Thanks!

Did you do this or have the clutch rebuilder do it? As Ross mentioned, they're supposed to be set to a certain height when the pressure plate is bolted down...if they were screwed all the way in, it sure sounds like the rebuilder didn't finish the adjustment process.
