zf5 question

I finally got my tranny out to do the clutch. I need some help identifying a part and it's purpose. There is some sort of phenolic piece with gear notches on it that goes over the input bearing retainer. Looks like the throw out bearing may rest against it. Mine is partially melted. Can anyone give me some clarity on this? Thanks.

I'm not a lot of help on exactly what that part is but... That's partially because if I'm going to the work of pulling the transmission to replace the clutch and throw out bearing you might as well replace the slave cylinder and throw out bearing as a unit. If the other parts are bad the slave isn't likely to be far behind and not a lot of fun to pull apart again to replace just that.

Most ZF's (maybe all, my memory is a bit fuzzy) have an external slave cylinder.

After looking on Rockauto.com I do believe you're correct, should've looked for the part he's looking for when I was there... I've had the privilege of owning non-ZF's....

What year and engine are you working on? Big block and diesel ZF transmissions use an external slave while the small block version uses a concentric slave. The concentric slave has a plastic piece that goes between a spring and the throwout bearing.

If that's what you're talking about I personally suggest replacing it if not it should be fine
