Welcome to FTE

You may have better luck (without providing a photo of engine/carb at least) of simply IDing the carburetor. Look for an aluminum tag attached to same. Failing that look for the carb list #s stamped on the carb itself.

There are other considerations - manual choke (or not) and whether a 4 barrel intake has been installed. Lots of changes can be made to a truck in 50 years and these have to be taken into account. The good folks here will help you out.

Engine has been swapped, it could be either a 240 or a 300 from 1974, as the block was cast October (K) 22, 1973 (3).

Thank you Tedster9!

I don't believe the carb is original. There is a choke cable but it is not hooked up to the carb..I think that may be one of the main issues, along with there being a vacuum leak at the base of the carb because it is cracked around where the bolt goes through. The only numbers I found on the carb were 2243..Here are a few pictures.

The engine is from a 1974 (see post 3) F100/350, as is the Carter 1V carburetor.

Carb has an automatic choke, so there's no choke cable required. But originally (1966), the Auto-Lite 1V carb had a manual choke w/a cable.

Carb has an automatic choke, so there's no choke cable.

See the lower cable feeding from the firewall? It's this: D4TZ-9A758-E .. Accelerator Cable - 24" long / 1974 F100 240 I-6 or 1974/76 F100/350 300 I-6.
Is the top cable on the firewall not a choke cable? That's what I was talking about not being connected to the carb.

1966 had an Auto-Lite 1V carb w/a manual choke and cable, but it's not being used, as the engine has been swapped.

The Carter 1V carb that came with the swapped engine has an automatic choke, so there's no place to attach the cable.

So..how do I find out if the engine is a 1974 240 or 300? And what type carb goes to each? Could i find a carb with a manual choke that would work with this engine? I wouldn't say I'm clueless..but I'm no mechanic..just trying to learn as I go.

Plenty of things to keep you busy with a truck of that vintage. Plenty. I would get a rebuild kit for the carburetor and find a good webpage dedicated to those. Some nutcase somewhere, has dedicated his entire life to that model and has a webpage. Maybe a YT video or two.

My opinion on old vehicles is start from the ground up, tires, wheels, brakes, bearings, driveshaft, shocks and suspension and steering, for example before getting spooled up on engine, transmission, cosmetics and interior or creature comforts. "Whoa" is just as important as "go".

Measure the stroke, 240 = 3.15" / 300 = 3.98"

OK, I'm old and the memory is fading fast but didn't the 300 have 5 freeze plugs on the side of the block and the 240 had 3???????

240/300 I-6 thru 1974: The block and bore are the same, so both have the same number of freeze plugs.

144/170 I-6 have 3 freeze plugs, 200/250 have 5.
