5.4

I just brought a 2008 f 150 lariat with almost 100,000 miles truck retails for 18,000 guy sold it to us for 9,250 had lsited for 10,000....The guy I brought it from NEVER done any maintenance to it oil changes air filter etc...he had it for 5 years...I got it I immediately got it serviced (I do that with any vehicle I buy) the oil dipstick I could not get to come out..the shop got it out.. When they changed oil they said it was almost like a glue substance...So put fresh 5-20 oil in drove home started running very rough shaking it sounds like a dam diesel. Shop said I got 2 choices fix cam phasers and hope motors not hurt or put in a brand new motor.. I went for a brand new motor....I want to here from some of you what would you do? Honest replies only please

Wow 5 years ...& no oil changes
considering what you're up against with the old engine....I'd prolly get a crate engine too. Odds are that you'd might not be able to get the original one rebuilt anyway...well maybe? But to just swapp out the phasers and timing chain tensioners....I suspect you'd constantly be flushing gunk that had built up from the previous owner lack of concern/maintenance and probably plugging up those new parts

I just hope I'm making the right choice buy going with a new 5.4...Have they fixed the problems like cam phasers and spark plug blowing out? A new motor would be better then rebuilding it or getting a used one and having that be 10X worse then the motor that's in truck know..everything will be brand new on it..

Haven't heard of a spark plug ejecting on these newer ones ,but I suppose it can still happen. They got away from the 2 piece spark plugs & there is "updated" phasers and pressure solenoids. Make sure you get the updated stuff and coupled with a new engine warranty you should be good.

It's probably not bad cam phasers necessarily but oil starvation from plugged screens and ports from the very old oil that the new oil is dissolving, possibly fixable but with that kind of abuse it's probably a lost cause to try to fix it. Oil sludge is nasty stuff!
