tool answer

Looking to buy a valve spring tool for the 5.4.
OTC has 2 part numbers for a tool that works on the 5.4, or so I assume anyway.
OTC number 6684
OTC 303-1039

Whats the difference?
I want to buy one ,or the other.

According to OTC 6684 Ford 3V Valve Spring Compressor Like 303-1039 | Hard to Find Automotive Specialty Tools
the only difference is cost.
"OTC 6684 is just like the Rotunda 303-1039 both made by SPX but the OTC6684 is sold at a much lower cost. Ford valve spring compressor for Ford 3 Valve engines. Also see the OTC-6681 (303-1175 equivelant) that is often used in conjunction with the 303-1039."

This tool is cheaper and looks more solid to me.
I have not used any of these tools.

Thank you Ted.
This tool is for the 2 valve engine
I was looking at the other 2 tool numbers and did not see a difference.
I wondered if there was a hidden difference, like tool quality, or fit and function.
Have you used either tool? Thanks

My bad - I didn't realize that there was a 2 valve 5.4.

No I haven't. There is a recent thread which shows the tool broke. I don't recall which tool it was.

I just don't understand why it takes such an expensive tool to simply take the load off the spring. I wonder if a universal tool would work.

This guy modified the 2V tool to work on the 3V engine.

I saw the thread with the broken tool.Part of the reason for this thread.
I don't want to buy an inferior tool.
If the only difference is the price then well........

Thanks Ted. I did not see the thread with the inexpensive tool/mod so it was pretty cool to see. Great Pics also.
Thanks to the OP (of that thread).
