trans temp question 2016 F350

Hi all,

my new 16 F350 shows trans running 199-207deg is this where they run???

I was expecting to see 180-190deg max temps. Just checking as this truck is big upgrade from my 02 with 4 speed auto.

Pulled my 11,300lb 5er this week up some hard pulls to over 7,500ft from the 500ft where I live and it hit 210 for about 5 min then settled back to 205-207 range.

It runs 199-205 unloaded, I am in AZ with about 105-110degs ambient right now.

Thanks

That is normal. My '12 F250 runs around 195 all the time, towing or not. My ambient air temps are in the 80's and 90's. So your higher air temps would explain the slightly higher trans temps.

I believe the manual lists the normal transmission temps. I was concerned at first too when I first got the truck. My 08 F150 had trans temps in the 170 range. AFter some research, I found out the higher temps are normal.

I would be interested in why the new 6R140 runs warmer than the 5R110 it replaced. Obviously it is designed that way, just curious why.

Yep, those are normal. These transmissions have a thermostat to ensure they get up to temp, and they all run in the 190s for normal driving.

I haven't heard figures for the 6R140, but the older models like the one in your '02 were good all day long up until 230 degrees. You could run between 230-250 for up to a half hour at a time. If those were good for a twenty-year-old design I wouldn't worry about 210 on your new truck. Sounds like it's operating as designed.
