We just purchased a 1999 Ford F150 4X4 back in March of 2003. And on our second pull with our 5th wheel trailer (only 23 feet) we noticed the light blinking at the end of the shifter.. Took it to a local tranny shop and they said it was a code 781 a 1-2 shift accumulator error. When they checked the spring that comes undone or breaks it was still there perfectly fine.. They say it is something more internal now and want to get into it more.. Does anyone have any ideas? When the light was blinking it drove fine and after we got home it started down shifting a little hard.. Other than that light we would not have ever known there was a problem...
How many miles on it?Ever changed the fluid and filter? If it were me,ide do that first;drain the pan and the converter and change the filter.Good luck and keep us posted!
The P0781 code means a problem with the 1-2 shift solenoid.
I would be inclined to take it to a dealer rather than a transmission shop, unless you know for sure that you can trust the shop you took it to. Trans shops always seem to want to rebuild the transmission rather than check for an easier problem.
I've replaced a few shift solenoids and have also seen corroded/loose/broken connectors that go to the solenoids.
I did not mean to give wrong advice but my friends 2000 Screw had the same code come up.Still under warranty Ford told him he needed to have the total fluid flush and filter change and the flush would dislodge any gunk causing the code.Well, they did it and it cured the problem. Now,whos to say they did not fix or replace a solenoid while in there but his reciept only stated a flush, filter and fill.
I'm sure Racerguy knows his stuff, ive seen him give lots of good advice. And I would trust him also to do what he says.Good luck and keep us posted!
BlueOvalFitter I dont think you gave wrong advice
Everyone has different experiences. Sometimes a flush will do a world of good and sometimes it wont. Like you asked earlier...how many miles on it and has the fluid ever been changed?
Hey thanks guy's.. It only has 62,000 miles on it as for a filter and change we hadn't had on done yet, I will ask the shop about the solenoids and the connections.. This is our first Ford and I love it.. I will talk to the tranny man tomorrow and will keep you posted on results.. Thanks again..
Well we got the truck back yesterday.. 2nd gear was gone.. They did a Mstr O'Haul kit w/3rd commercial clutch pack, HD LU torque convertor, low roller clutch, overdrive band, systems upgrade kit, set shift solenoids, epc solenoid, tcc solenoid & brkt, intemediate doide, 2nd gear pressure plate, vb stiffner plate, torrington bearing set, and a front u-joint.. I don't know what all this stuff, is they said we wouldn't have any problems pulling our trailer now.. Thanks again everyone..
