Coarse spline D60

I was under the impression all the later rear D60's were fine spline? Last night I went to rob some brake hardware off the axle of the 78 F250 4wd parts truck I had bought and found it had the old style axles in it.

Yes it should have the 30-32 spline (i forget) and not the 16 spline.

maybe it's an earlier axle with moved perches - i think they are date stamped on the housing.

I was looking at the perches last night and they look as factory as they get. I didn't look real close for numbers but I'm wondering if the axles and carrier were changed. I would think that stuff was interchangeable between the housings. I just don't know why someone would bother.

A 2wd shouldn't need the perches moved but I don't know if they came with the 16 spline at all after 1972

It should be 30 to my knowledge

F250 rear axle Dana 60 16 spline: 1955/74, 1975 before serial number W20,001.

F250 rear axle Dana 60 30 splines: 1975 from serial number W20,001; 1976/79.

I'll have to look tomorrow and see if it is date stamped. Just looking at the front axle to the back one my guess would be they were the matched set that came with the truck.

According to number dummy's dates the front if matching would be drums

It won't match because we already found that you have a 2wd rear axle

2WD/4WD rear axle is the same, the only thing that has to match the front driving axle is the gear ratio.

I edited out 2WD from my previous post, only used it to define rear axle.

I tried looking this number up on the Dana website but it wouldn't pull anything up. I've used it before on both D60 fronts I have and it worked so I idk. Maybe someone else can identify it.

The Dana 60 BOM number (stamped on the axle tube or on an ID tag adjacent to the inspection cover) consists of 6 or 7 numbers, like these examples: 603717-1 or 603717-11.

Ford rear axle ID tag is under 2 of the bolts that retain the inspection cover to the housing.

Now that you say that I don't know what I was thinking when I got that number. I do know the tag is long gone so I guess that's the end of the road.
