2015 Tailgate question

I just bought a 2015 tailgate shell and it is one that can have a step so I figured cool, I'll put a step in it but then I saw the price for the step and the steps gonna wait. My question is will the regular tailgate cap work on this tailgate?

NO. The lift assist tailgate (with the step) is wider on the top edge than the one without. And its 3 pieces verses one piece. Im in the same boat I have an 11 that I want to add this feature too. Im going to purchase the color matched shell and build my own as I have a damaged lift assist gate. I just need a new shell and the top plastic pieces. The new shells are available online color matched. All the guts are available through Ford.

If is wider that's to bad!! I am buying a new bed next week and it comes with the standard tailgate which I could use but I would rather make this one work and flip the standard one. Then when I want to spring for the step l'll have that option but now is not the time as I'm replacing all the body panels and new paint so every penny counts. I thought of something this morning of making a short dummy spacer to mount like the step and since its wider then I could buy the three top pieces and mount the middle piece to the mod piece and hopefully that will work. Thanks for your help!!!

And just to clarify both tail gates will fit the bed its just the top and inner panel with the pull up handle that have different dimensions over the standard gate. So ya I suppose you could build a dummy panel to mount the top piece in the middle which is actually the step. Though if memory serves me that may be a tough feat. Circle back to report if you were successful.
