P1247 Code but can't figure it out.

Alright I have a 01 F250 with the 7.3L in it. Recently had the turbo rebuilt and all the surrounding gaskets changed as well as boots. All this was done around 1,000 miles ago. Runs great and I don't see/feel any issues, no white smoke anytime, little black when I turn up the tuner and really ride the thing but normal driving none. Problem is I have a pending P1247 code that after a few days will throw a CEL... I'm not sure what the problem is and have been searching the forum and people are mostly saying they get it but the boost drops or there isn't any at all and the truck my stall or bog down. I don't have any of those problems. Turbo spools up to whatever I want and I've never had it stall or bog or even get close... So what should I check? Also new to the site and diesels. so hello everyone!

What does your boost gauge or MAP say at Wide Open Throttle with or without the tune?

What he said...

You may hear the turbo spool up, but that doesn't mean you are making the boost you should. P1247 indicates a low boost situation. Unless your MAP sensor is faulty, I would say there is actually an issue with boost.

Alright so I did some WOT on the way to work without the tune. Run around 13-14 PSI WOT and no white smoke or anything. 3-4 psi cruising at 65 MPH. It's 80 degrees out and I live in a fairly hilly area. Also at 55 feet above sea level give or take 50 if it helps.

How's that look?

Ick. Low boost, no smoke. Of the easy tests without OBDII scan tool/gauge - the ICP sensor can possibly give this symptom. Try unplugging that connector (you'll get a SES light, but it's OK) and see how the truck behaves.

Other than that... search the forum for "boost leak detector" and "EBP cleaning", then inspect everything you can see under the hood for any soot whatsoever.

Ick? And okay after work I'll unplug the thing and drive it to school and report back. It's fine to drive 15 or so miles with it unplugged?

Yeah, it's fine to drive it like that. That is low boost on a stock truck. What tuner are you running?

Spectator question: what should the boost #s be for a stock truck? Also, I'm assuming a tuned truck will have higher boost numbers?

It was in stock and I believe I have the TS 6 position tuner. I'll disconnect it and see what happens. Where should I look for boost leaks?

Minimum of 16PSi stock, but many see 18-20ish. A tuned truck will see over 25 some see close to 30 depending on other mods. With my stock turbo with a 1st generation wicked wheel, and PIS 160cc/30% over sized nozzle injectors, I would see 34-35ish. My tranny isn't the best and in my daily driver tune and 38R and not beating on it too hard, I have seen over 35PSi a few times now.

OP, search boost leak detector. There are many threads on how to build one.

Many thanks. Now off to find my boost leak...

4" exhaust, Ford AIS intake, and red line mod on an otherwise stock truck (way back when) - I could pop the 22 PSI boost limit and the truck would defuel. In other words... without a boost fooler, you can go 22 PSI and no more on a stock (or stock-ish) truck. Bone stock in 100% condition should flirt with 18 PSI boost.

Chipped stock-ish? Like HKusp said:

Curious what you find out. I am having the same issue with another truck. Everything is OEM new except the turbo, and that's next.

It's been 104 degrees+ here so I haven't had the will power to check much out yet. Going to disconnect the ICP before work tomorrow and drive it to work and see if there is any difference. Tomorrow it's only going to be like 102 so maybe I'll have the will power to look more or build a boost detector. If not saturday I will for sure but I looked at all my boots just visually from the outside and they looked good and all the clamps are tight. So we'll see what happens when I look into it further. Also going to try and clean the EBP tomorrow. I'll keep you guys updated.

Understood. I had a long talk with a friend of mine the other day who is a Ford diesel factory trained mechanic who runs his own shop now after cashing out his life and breaking away from FORD. He is the fella I usually call if I can not figure it out.

He said they had a very similar issue a long time ago on a truck at FORD. Everything came in as satisfactory in the diagnostics department, besides it simply built little boost at WOT. Sufficient back pressure, no intake leaks, and the list goes on. Turbo was fairly new and was still nice and tight.

Turns out they pulled the turbo, and dropped in a new one and problem resolved immediately. After further inspection the exhaust side was missing a few blades and a few were beat up from when the others let go. This was the issue.

I have since called the friend that i had been trouble shooting his truck and asked him to take a peak when he gets a chance and get back to me. I'm curious what he finds. Either way we are rebuilding the turbo, but am curious if the exhaust side is damaged.

I have rebuilt close to a 150 turbos from wee small ones off a subaru to 5-10k hp CAT powered compressor drive units. I have never seen an exhaust wheel damaged except for a Subaru that dropped and exhaust valve that actually made it out the head and through the turbo exhaust exducer.

I'm curious now if this may be the cause, but by any means, pop off your down pipe and shoot in there with a flashlight and mirror before you dig too deep.
