I own an 86 150 4x4 4spd, 300 6 that is due for a rebuild. I havent owned the truck long and im not very familiar with all of the mods for this motor. I would like to convert carbs / intake / exhaust , clutch ... while im rebuilding the motor. I notice that some have done this already and im curious if they have noticed a dramatic increase in power or should i be looking at a 302 or 351 swap to this truck. I use this as a daily driver /toy / hobbie. I do not want a 500 hp ride but i do want more power out of this rebuild. Could someone please post there opinions and some links for 300 performance parts. Also , if i modify the 300 with intake , carb how bad can i expect my mileage to get ? Will a v8 be better? Im getting about 13 mpg now.
Someone had mentioned cliffords intake in an old post but i havent been able to find a link.
Thanks

Just installed a Ford rebuilt engine, with Offenhauser intake, Holley 390 vac. secondary, duraspark 2 ignition in my 86. Up until i blew the head, it ran, but was slow. I believe some of the problem was a lot of vacuum leak, but other than that it ran pretty good for 173k miles.
The rebuilt block, intake, carb, and ignition were definitely worth the time and money. I also removed all of the emissions equipment, since it was easier to take it all off than hook it up to the new carb and such. Runs 100% better than it had in the last 3 years.
My mileage was about 15mpg 3 years ago. The last few months I had been getting about 13. With all the work done, I get 12 ~ 13 now. I am also only 2wd, no O.D. though.
I think if i put a stronger spring in the secondary dashpot, the milage will be close to the original (if i drive it nice).
Can anyone recomend a good spring size for the Vacuum secondaries?
performance parts for a 300 are expensive. but its something not a lot of people biuld. glad i did it. if you do swap you will need to change the motor mount towers on the frame.
