thinking of advancing my spark a little somebody said it would help with the fuel milage and power. is it counter clockwise and from stock how many deg should I try? any ideas would be appreciated. also what about after market coils for an 83 carberated engine.

I guess you are supposed to turn it clockwise for timing advance. I think stock timing is 10 degrees BTDC. You can bump it up to 12 or maybe 14 at most. Yeah, you are supposed to get better mileage and power but nothing too drastic.

Not on an I6, turn it counterclockwise to advance the timing, made a huge difference in power on my 87, ( but also made the valves louder). Ran like a striped a** ape, especially with the 4spd t-18 and 3.83 gears. 12-14 MPG's best 15.5 70mph@3K rpm. Too far clockwise and you will crack the manifold from the extra heat. (Found this out first hand).
Don't waste your money on a coil, unless your going to replace the whole ignition. The stock coil has plenty of juice.

stock timinng on my 83 is 8 deg. i wouldn,t any more than 12. when you do ,when going down the highway listen for knocking and back it off 2 degrees until the knocking stops. careful though, i played to much and broke all but 4 rings and
broke 1 piston. didn't know it until i tore the engine down(stock pistons and rings)
