We have an 04 Navi with 139k miles. Wife and I tested a CPO 12 Navi with 34k miles. On the test drive she said it way slower than the 04. I took over the controls and immediately stomped on the gas. Well it got up and went like it should. I think the issue is on the 04, the acceleration is more linear. For the 12, it seems you have to give the pedal much more push for the same results. Would you think that is by design? I know they are different engines and transmissions. She also said the 12 rode rougher. The 04 suspension has been converted while the 12 has OEM suspension. Is she crazy (as I look over my shoulder)?
Does the '04 have the "drive-by-wire" throttle body? If not, perhaps the difference in response is due to the older one having a direct cable going to the throttle body, while the newer does not? The Drive-by-wire system works in the sense that the accelerator is used to set the desired torque, and the PCM will move the plate in the throttle body accordingly to meet the desired torque. The response curve can then be adjusted in the PCM, and I suspect the OEM stock setting is somewhat conservative to emphasize smooth accelerator feel, or something to that end...
Funny you said that. I told her the same thing the difference might be cable vs drive by wire. I do not know for a fact if the 04 is cable, but I would think so.
Drive by wire = electrical.. Maybe you mean the 04 had a mechanical cable and the 12 has no physical connection, and handles the throttle electronically? If yes, then 04 is cable, 12 is drive by wire. I have an 05 expy, and I believe that was the year they introduce the drive by wire system, I just wasnt sure if they introduced it earlier in the Navi, since its a more premium vehicle which gets some features first...
They probably tuned it a bit differently to help save on fuel economy for the 2012. Gearing will also have a huge effect, although I imagine the 2012 is a six speed.
Just agree with her that obviously the 04 is a better vehicle and should be kept! Don't spend the money on the 12. Wait a couple more years and pickup a used 15 with the eco boost V6, as long as they remain reliable. That's what I'm thinking of doing.
I'm a little hesitant on getting one of those ecoboost things. The turbos on those are ridiculously expensive, and I'm not convinced on how long they will last.. I don't know, but I have the impression that the turbos are the weak point on it..
Well we for sure will not be getting the 12 Navi. I would love to get the new Navi, but prices are way crazy right now and for the next few years. Ford has been using the Ecoboost for a few years now and "should" have most of the issues solved. My biggest thing is IF it has direct injection would be the crude buildup on the back of the valves.
I heard you just gotta floor those engines once a month to keep the carbon deposits from building. My dad bought him one of those Ecoboost F150s and I have to say the power is awesome, but I will be a little worried about the thing until it's 15-20 years old! Hah. There were 2 in town that we checked out when he was buying. One was a loaded black 2013 FX4 with the 5.0 and a grille guard. The other was his 2012 loaded KR 4x4 Ecoboost.
My dad isn't so heavy footed like I am so I have to remind him often every now and then to WOT it. But I guess time will tell just how good it does.
