Turbo upgrade

I've got a 2/98 built F-350. I'm planning on installing an Edge programmer and a custom tuner package after.

I only want a moderate "boost" in hp and performance, no more than the stock 7.3 will stand. With that said I wondered if there was an upgrade for the turbo, I don't want more boost necessarily, just shorter spool time and a more consistent boost pressure.

The only thing that's been done to the truck is a full 4" straight exhaust. Installed by the PO (the pipe coupler on turbo still looks to be stock size, increasing to 4" after)

I would stay away from the Edge tuner. It is not healthy for a 7.3. Check out riffraff diesel. They have a turbo wheel upgrade that many like. Actually, check there for anything you would want for a 7.3! Clay is very helpful and makes many cool upgrades for these rigs. If you are looking to upgrade start with an intake since you have an exhaust, check to see if has the stock down pipe

I want a full display programmer, not really concerned w the chip side yet. I wanted one to display all aspects of the engine (temps, pressure, etc). I know I can install gauges but I think I'd be fine w the monitor. Plus I like the code reading function of a few of them. Thoughts? Or best to ask riffraff?

I believe you are on the right track after having my buddy show me his Edge CTS in his truck. With all the stuff that it can monitor I wish I would have went that route instead of buying & installing gauges in my truck. If I had to do it again I would get the CTS with the fuel pressure monitor added to it & be done with it. Just make sure which parameters can be monitored with your PCM being an early '99.

I was looking to buy the same thing. That was until I had enough people turn me away from it. I ended up getting pillar gauges( trans, boost, egt) and a DpTuner with just a 60hp tow tune, 80hp daily driver, and 120hp race. Depending on how many tunes you are looking to get it really isn't that expensive. For the chip and my three tunes it was only $400.00. And I couldn't be happier with the results!!

Is like a high idle setting, we run a lot of battery operated dump trailers, and for jumping heavy equipment off (no pocket knife behind the throttle on this one haha), a tow/haul setup with late shifts, and maybe a +60hp.

And good point on the early 99 PCM issue. I'll be sure to check all aspects before purchasing. The Edge CTS was the one I looked at, with a hydra custom tuned chip.

I don't disagree with you as far as the tuning goes but as far as gauges vs. monitor I believe it's no contest that the CS/CTS is far and away a much better route with all the stuff that it can monitor...I'd trade my 3 gauges for the CTS any day, not to mention being able to read the codes.

My thoughts exactly! I know the arguments against the live programmer monitors, but it's not enough to sway me.

I hear you about the high idle, works great for spinning the A/C too lol

Many would say that you already have the best turbo setup for the e99 short of spending upwards of $2500.

This is a link to Riffraff's site and their e99 upgrade:

Riffraff Diesel Early 99 to Late 99-03 Conversion Kit for Ford 7.3L

It will kind of let you know everything that is involved in switching to the late 99 turbo or upgrading to an even larger tubro, the GTP38R.

Before you jump onto the tuning bandwagon, make sure everything else is healthy. Then read several of the threads about tuning. "Tugly", one of our members, has a link about all of this in his signature.

Regarding an 80 or especially a 120hp tune...it isn't going to happen with a tune alone regardless of what any tuning company tells you. You'll need larger injectors and a larger turbo to realistically hit those hp marks.

Yea like I said I'm not interested in anything over 60... Really I'm happy with ~45hp. Just wanted some better mileage and a more useful shift pattern with a little help in the fuel department.

I plan to get the egt prob when I get the CTS, and I'm not loading any running packages until I'm sure everything else on the engine is solid. I know the E99 trucks are limited and am not looking to boil the tires. Just get the best performance from the motor while keeping dependability high. I've installed a new radiator, thermostat, leaf springs, bushings, ball joints, and cleaned the intercooler fully. Having the 4R100 flushed and gone through soon.

Just trying to hone my "modest super duty" project directions haha

One other thing... The HPOP has been replaced by PO. I get a SES light after start up, sometimes. When I pulled the codes a couple weeks ago, all I got were 2. 1 P0603 and 1
P1280.

P1280 - "ICP Circuit Out of Range Low"

Haven't been able to check codes again, but I suspect this is it popping up after start up... Thoughts??

P0603=KAM error. You say you are not chipped which could cause this, have you disconnected the battery recently?

P1280=Check your ICP sensor for oil in the connector for a start. Then check the tin nut on the rear of the IPR and make sure it is tight.
