I just bought a 2001 f150 supercrew. I was told that the locking mechanism didn't work right so I took off the door panel. I can tell when using the power locks that the actuator is weak and probably needs replacing. I also noticed that there is not cable or rod going to the actual door lock, that is to say where you put the key in the door to unlock or lock the door. Does anyone have a picture of what this locking system should look like? I assume that for some reason I am missing the rod that goes from the actuator to the door lock. Thanks in advance. And I can't just look at the passenger side because it is the same way.
What you want is a parts blow up from a dealer parts program.
Go there and ask what they can print out for you.
The lock assembly is a DC reversible electric motor that turns a fast spiral, pulling and pushing a rod to operate the lock.
These motors have a rubber cover that goes bad over the years and lets water into the motor.
This causes rust to set thing fast.
In winter time, water in the motor can freeze until the cab gets warm enough to melt the ice.
It's difficult to get in to work let alone do a photo.
If the motor is missing the push rod it must be laying on the bottom of the door some place.
I would feel your in for replacement of both motors.
Good luck.
I made a video a while back when I was trying to figure mine out. I never could find a great diagram, but I found the part number at one point in time after searching for a while (but not idea what it is).
