Remember how yer ol V-8 would run when it fouled a plug or a plug wire came off? Well, that's how my buddies 7.3 is running. If you floored it, I don't think it would beat a Yugo...It is hard to start, but doesn't cut out, spit or sputter, it just has no power and during idle or any time its running, it sounds like it isn't hitting on one cyl. I looked in his Chilton's to see how to test the injectors and glow plugs, but it didn't have anything about that. It really sounds like one cyl isn't hitting. Its a 96 crewcab, 8 ft bed, 4x4, with a manual tranny...He's been running it like this for about a year and there's no knocking or unusual noise's...How bout it guys, whatdoya think???
Thanks in advance,....Tom G.
im no expert and im sure others will chime in with more useful info but... make sure the oil is good, and the level is good. batterys are good. check the easy stuff first. (kiss-keep it simple stupid) then go to the cps (camshaft position sensor) they can cause weird problems. check your valve cover gaskets, they have two connections on each side where you can get burnt up pins causing an injector not to fire. if those look good check your tin nut on the ipr, make sure its not loose. then check the icp to make sure no oil is coming out of the top. and check the idm to make sure theres no water in it. "DRIVING IT FOR A YEAR LIKE THIS" youre crazy, look at the stickys at the top of the forum im pretty sure theres a flowchart somewhere in there. good luck!

Thanks sean, I'll see what he's done with her. Supposely its been to some "expert" 7.3 mechanic's, but it still runs like crap. I'm not a bad mechanic, so I thought I'd poke around. I think he's replaced the CPS, but probably with a cheapie....I'll look at the valve cover gaskets and see if anything looks unusual....In the mean time, I'll read the sticky's....Thanks and have a good evening...Tom
Most people that claim to be 7.3 expert are full of hot air. Is the oil filter black? Fuel pressure good? Check the valve cover harness for burnt pins. If al the pins look good inside and out watch the injectors for consistent oil volumes coming from them.
Ask about when was the last time the oil, oil filter and fuel filter was changed. You'd be surprised at how much that affects run-ability.
Mine perked back up after rebuilding the fuel bowl. Didn't really need rebuilding but the screen needed cleaning and there was a pile of crap in the bottom along with the worthless crapped out bowl heater (which I tossed in the can). She woke up like she was new after that!
