So, I want to get an 04 excursion. I have found the one I want, options/mileage/price, etc. However my wife doesn't think they are safe. She wants me to get something that costs a ton more for the airbags and newer safety equipment. What I am asking for is factual based info. She lost someone very close to her because of an accident in a large 2500 diesel truck. She doesn't buy into the "bigger is safer" idea. So if you have any personal stories or photographic "evidence" I can show her to convince her, please either send me a pm or post it up. I really don't want to spend 40k+ on a new diesel truck. Thanks in advance.
In a case like this, I do not believe you are going to get anywhere with changing your wife's fear.
There have been more than a couple of people on here with pretty bad wrecks in their Exs. You should be able to search this part of the forum to pull up those threads.
I hope you don't think I am overstepping here, but you may want to consider that peace of mind for the wife is worth more than your money.
When you can predict what accident you're going to be in, then you can pick what is the best vehicle to survive in.
It's safe to say I've worked hundreds of accidents in my time in fire/rescue, and when your number is called, it doesn't matter what you're in. I've witnessed a man in a dump truck die in an under 10mph accident, I'd seen people in a Honda Fit get t boned and walk away. Nothing is the perfect vehicle, however I will take mass as being on my side 90% of the time.

Oh no worries. No toes have been stepped on. Thanks!
I agree with brewcaptain. I was a police officer for 8 years. There are so many variables to consider, but erring on the side of mass is not a bad side on which to err.

I have to agree, I am also in the same line of work. You just never know, hence why they are called accidents. We get a ton of ice on the interstate that runs through my town due to our proximity to a major river, and I have seen a different vehicles do a lot of different things. Had a lifted F-250 get sideways, roll several times and end on its side, passengers (all restrained) kicked out the windshield and stepped out and walked away. Family in a mini-van, same thing- 4 kids mom and dad, kids all restrained in car seats- perfectly unphased, dad (restrained) minor injuries, Mom choose not to wear a seat belt this day, was reported by passerby's ejected 20 ft. into the air , (through sunroof) and sent air ambulance, ended up being fine ultimately, there is just too many variables to predict- but we can see the common denominator in all these instances...
As B-shifter says- mass x velocity, I will take the mass of this vehicle any time over a prius
It's probably best if you discuss what your wife thinks is most suitable and work from there. It will be a miserable ownership experience if your wife is unhappy.

You can do as immortal_ben suggested, but keep in mind that these are the people who survived. The deceased tend to not post their experiences, for some reason.
My Mother's neighbor also has an Excursion. They were on an interstate pulling a big travel trailer when something went wrong on the trailer. The Excursion and trailer wound up rolling over and off the road.
According to Ed, they were both using seat belts and they both walked away. I asked him what he plans to do next, "Buy another Excursion" was his response.
But, I agree with what others have said. I can't give chapter and verse on safety on these vehicles. I suppose it could be argued that a more modern truck with more airbags, inflatable seat belts, etc could be safer.
