Paint progress and rearend question

So I was orignally thinking about replacing the original c4 with a Aod but when I took the bed off I found that the 9 in rear end may have just really low gears. I was wondering if changing that would improve my performance for possible Highway driving.

When you peel away the paint you find some body filler.

2x....

Then multiply the rear end ratio by the ratio of fourth gear of an AOD.

For example: A 4.11 rear gear times 0.67 results in a final drive ratio of 2.75... and that's a really good gear for long hauls and MPG.

Nice clean body! After all the long years that poor 'ol truck has a right to have a little body filler. She's going to be a nice one! Gary

See if there is an ID tag still on the differential.

So it looks like I have a 28 spline 3.25 gear. Does anyone know if these trucks came with posi-traction?

I guess the aod swap is probably the best choice.

Limited Slip was available as an option, posi-traction is a GM term.

How did you determine the ratio is 3.25-1 and the axle shafts have 28 splines?

My 79 F150 SC didn't come with posi-traction. But, does have a limited slip differential.

Splitin hairs, 6 of one-1/2 dozen of the other. 3.25 is a good all around gearing. Pulls well, intown use is well, but 2500 RPM @ 65 MPH no bueano. I'd go with the O/D personally. I drive an FE and O/D selection is limited unless one has an unlimited wallet.

Nice body... hope you will post a pic after painting.

Before OD became common cruising around or even a bit above 3,000 RPM was pretty common. The engines can take it... though will not last 200k miles as is common today.

Also it looks like you have decent size tires (what diameter, it matters?). Engine matters also. Personally, I think a 3.25 ratio is already a "highway gear" and would not go with a lower ratio for a PU. It should run 75 MPH without hurting anything. OD would be nice but not necessary for what you are doing.

29.5 to 30 in tires. I like 31s but the M/T are really noisy so I am trying to find a decent wide tire size thats close to stock height thats an all-terrain.

Aod seems like the route I am going to go, but I am nervous about the TV cable issue. I know nothing about transmission so I know that a constant pressure valve body will help but I have no experience installing it.

I had a '75 e100 with a 9" in it. The ring gear fell off the diff carrier and I came to a nice stop.

Anyway, a junkyard was close by and when I was shopping, I had them get a lower (or is it higher?) gear ratio third member, like 3.00-ish ratio. Wish I had done this sooner than later and made highway driving the 300 a dream.

I'm going to guess that a complete junkyard third member is cheaper than stuffing an AOD in. While your at it, maybe get the 31 spline shafts too. Or maybe a small collection of turd members to play with.

Depends on engine an tire size,,, my 66 F100 has I-6 240, and T-18, with 265/70/15's and 3.00's were to tall,, not enough power, swapped it to 3.70's, MUCH more fun to drive! Look at your final product, tires and engine and intended driving.

Having an overdrive transmission and a lower rear end ratio (higher numerically) will allow you to do BOTH pulling heavy loads OR to be able to cruise the highway at greatly reduced engine RPMs with less fuel consumption.

Without an overdrive, if you gear the truck higher in the rear end (lower numerically), you'll have better gas mileage and lower engine RPMs on the highway but the truck will be slower on acceleration and very weak when it comes to pulling loads.

On the other hand without an overdrive, if you have a lower set of gears (higher numerically) in the rear end, the truck will have good acceleration and the ability to pull heavy loads but, at the expense of poorer fuel mileage and increased engine RPMs on the highway.

This will be the remedy of the non-overdriven C-4 automatic currently in my truck --a '98 Ford 4R70W 4-speed electronically-shifted overdrive automatic. This is the 3rd generation of the old AOD.

My truck ('69 F100) currently has an inline 240 six cylinder. This will get replaced and the 4R70W will be coupled to a 1990 Mustang 5.0L H.O. EFI 5.0L engine.
