Excursion Help needed... May be my first

2003 Excursiom 4x4 Limited 6.0
I really need your expert advice since this may be my first Diesel. Please evaluate photos. I did a road test drive about 25 miles. Runs and drives great. Torque Pro app only showed coolant temp at 188. Would not show oil temp. Hard to cold start. New injectors. Has a programmer. Thanks for any help before buying. He is asking 12K. It has 209K miles.
It belongs to a friend of mine and he rarely drives it. It stays under a cover most of the time.

Well head gaskets are good, first signs are white residue at degas bottle.
I can't tell how much coolant is in there? Color looks like ford gold, not preferred but not the end of the world.
K&N filter has to go, specially with all the dirt that's on it. I'm sure the turbo itself has seen better days.
Temps at 188 only means you have an OEM thermostat in there. They do weaken after awhile.
Oil temps would be great if you can get that, that will tell us the condition of your oil cooler.
The oil filter cover is NOT OEM and that's not a good thing in the case of the 6.0.
Have him setup oil temps in his app along with keeping coolant temps, re test drive hwy at 65mph for 10 miles your deltas need to be within 10 degrees at 15 or above you have a clogged oil cooler. Ideal would be within 4 degrees without load.

Hope this helps!

Thanks LL. I tried using my Torque Pro and it did not display oil temp. I tried multiple times. Oil filter cover? Where is that? I didn't look at the coolant color. I will go back and check it. What air filter is preferred if not K&N?

The stock air box is good upto 500 hp and is much better filtration than any other option. Therefore keeping your turbo clean and free of harmful debris.

I use the K&N but am well over 500hp and fortunate for me a turbo price and a pack of gum mean about the same to me

This is what my filter looks like, I replace them at $90 each twice a year so it always looks like this.

Also your ac plumbing looks like it was bent or changed at one point.... Edit... 03' ran different than my 05' so looks correct for the period.

This one is over 500 hp too when set "hot" on the programmer. It is set for economy now I think. I should get one of these filters if I buy it. Can you tell me where? What about the price? Is it reasonable?

The hard starts can be caused by a ton of different things, HPOP, Orings, the actual program running on the tuner, FICM. Etc. I just don't have that experience, nothing a good dealer couldn't figure out in a few minutes.

A tuner alone is not getting you over 500hp...

So, now I will say you need receipts on what was done like injector size, turbo etc.

Your better off buying the filters online, cheaper than my local speed shop I'm sure.

For the interior, swap the 2 front armrest covers. That will put the tore up cover facing down on the passenger side giving you 2 unused tops. No tools needed, the vinyl just pulls off... Easy

Good to know. Thanks. I probably misunderstood a bit on the hp when discussing the tuner. Again, my first dealing with a diesel. What about the price of the truck? Does it seem reasonable?

That air filter needs to go. More importantly, that oil filter needs to go. The ford OEM filter is the best oil filter you can get, and the aftermarket have a history of shredding and putting debris in the system. IIRC ford put out a service bulletin about that, people were destroying engines with oil filters.

Personally, I prefer the "unmolested" variety of vehicle, so if there' modifications to be done, I can do them myself and know they're done right. It's real easy for plenty to go wrong on the 6.0, and get expensive very fast.

One more thing. I did notice while driving, it did seem to float about the lane. I was hoping no one would think I was drunk. I didn't know if this was normal or not.
