I ordered a 2015 F150 4x4 with the 5L engine. I tried to order a block heater and was told it is only available in seven states and Michigan is not included. The option is also available as a fleet option. The dealer wants $230 to install a block heater. I contacted Ford and really did not receive a good answer.
This sounds correct to me. It's how Ford has it set up, so there really isn't a way around adding one other than aftermarket. If every other truck sold in your region doesn't have the heater then I'd suggest you may not "need" one either, and so if you want one, you can get it added at your cost.
The dealership can charge whatever they want, but it's almost always going to be more than a factory order even if they do it at cost. They have to buy the parts and pay someone to put it in (the service dept isn't expected to work for free for sales). I'm not sure what your expectations are.
I was able to order a block heater on my last two Ford trucks. A 1999 and 2004 F150's. My 1999 F150 with 204,000 miles has the heater on anytime it is freezing . The truck had the original battery for thirteen years. I get heater output less than three miles from my home. I live in the Northern most part of Michigan in the UP. Last winter we had over two months of below zero temperatures. I plan to have a local repair shop install one for a lot less. They use Ford parts.
My expectations would that dealers in southern states wouldn't stock a truck with a block heater but if someone wanted to order a truck equipped with such then it should be available.
The last time I looked, the northern border states, New England and the mid west get pretty darned cold and a guy from Michigan can't get a factory installed block heater?
