I guess Ford and C4 are redundant, but anyway I have now realized, after installing the transmission and engine this past month into my 71 f100 that the shift lever on my tranny is for a floor shift. I need a column shift.
If I can find a correct shift lever can that be swapped out with tranny still under the truck? Is this a project that one with limited knowledge of transmissions should tackle?
Anyone know of any sources for this part(s). I have an aftermarket Lokar unit, but would prefer the correct part.
Also, would the small block Ford filler tube be correct for my straight six (pan fill). Mine is pretty bent up.
This can be done while it's still in the vehicle, its a pain but I have done it several times, getting the pin out of the case can be a challenge especially if someone has been there before. Change the shifter seal while you are there.
I dont know of any sources for the exact part, you will have to know what it is suppose to look like and search for it. There are several configurations of the linkage for this tranny, I use to have a box full of them but that's long gone now.
I did get the Lokar aftermarket shift lever and connecting rod connected this morning. Shifts ok, but doesn't line up with the indicator very well. The factory downshift bracket doesn't work with it yet.
Really contemplating some options using a four on the floor. Enough challenges on this project to drive me crazy.
Have a ebay seller who says he has a column shift lever for a c4 and is willing to send it to me as part of a straight up trade for my existing shift lever.
Is the haynes manual a good companion to try this swap?

There are many different lever configurations.
To hope you will get the proper one is very iffy.
Yes the one being sold may have come from a column shift but won't necessarily be what you want.
Go to any library and get an automotive manual.
There is no pin to be removed. A 1/2" and 15/16" nut only.
The valve body must be removed first. Pay special attention to location of the shift valve in the valve body in connection with the shift lever. Miss the slot and the vehicle may or may not move.
Not what I wanted to hear (:
In any event, I ordered a haynes ford automatic rebuild manual and rebuild manual from workbench publications (also included a rebuilding manual for 8.8/9 inch differentials).
