Hello everyone I own a 2002 Ford Explorer XLS 4x4. I am having a problem with it. Whenever the car sits for a short or longer period of time when I first shift the car makes a screetching sound from the engine and also when I'm sitting at a red light the engine clicks (like a popcorn in a microwave sound) and there are also a series of clicks when i first step on the gas. I had it to ford in Feb and they replaced the flexpipe and the torque converter. This time they are telling me it's the drive shaft. I was curious if this sounds like it could really be the driveshaft or are they guessing? It is the same exact problem that I had the first time. Has anybody else experienced this?
My 2002 also makes that same noise when I put it in gear when it is cold. I am sure it is the automatic transmission. Why did you torque conveter go out?
that is what they said was causing the popcorn sound clicking. This time they are telling me its the driveshaft for both of my problems. I actually think they are getting it right this time. You shoul have your checked out before it gets worse, believe me it will. I first thought it was due to cold weather, i was wrong though
I noticed that on the NHTSB web site there is a TSB that covers the exact problem that you described. Don't know if you knew this or not, but if may be worth mentioning to your dealer...
