I bought a new take off bed and a 05 Cab(both rust free!) and I want some input on what to put on the underside to slow the eventual rust. I'd like to get products I can do myself if at all possible.
Line-X it or Rhino Line it and it won't rust. I tried the spray undercoating in a can and it works ok but not as good as the other options. I live in SoCal so I don't have a rust issue other than the first few years of the trucks life living at the beach so the springs look a little rough. While the parts are still readily accessible, it would not take much to have them sprayed.
It all goes back to proper prep work, Get it clean, clean, and then clean. I am a big believer in Ospho, but some people don't like it. I don't know why people don't like it, it kills the rust, also if using Ospho let dry and then leave on the white residue. I agree with SARDiverDan, the undercoat in the can wears off over time. The last paint I used on my tractor was the stuff from Tractor Supply and it works great, stays on with good prep, only bad thing is direct sun light will fade it over time. I like paint, because you can easily repair yourself, as compared to the LineX.
POR-15 is the best nothing else will hold up go to there website http://www.por15.com/ all u do is knock of the loose rust then apply the por-15 and it stops rust dead and wont chip even if you hit it with a hammer
sandblast it to bare metal, prime with a 2 part epoxy primer wait 1 hour after spraying primer, just enough to let it flash off but not dry and try something like scorpion bed liner,it is a 2 part bedliner spray it sticks great doesnt allow moisture through but it will not go on as thick as the commercially sprayed rhino or line x,but it lets you do it all yourself,my 2 cents
Take it from someone in the rust belt Green Bay WI. Use a good pressure washer to remove what loose rust or dirt is there. Use Por-15 or comparable product from E-bay. I myself would spend the extra 10 bucks and stick with Por-15. Just buy a gallon and brush/roll it on by hand. That way you can apply twice in areas you know are prone to rust.
If you want to go the extra step. What I did on my wife's 65 Mustang I bought a gallon of good oil based red primer. I suppose one could use a coat of paint as well if you really wanted to go nuts. But the oil based paint is because on the Por-15 is also petroleum based. And I undercoated on top of all that for sound and protection. But we are talking a car I feel I can drive pretty much in anything now short of salt. And do.

I wire wheeled the rust off mine, sprayed with rustoleum rusty metal primer, then 3 coats of black rustoleum. Ive heard to many stories of por15, bedliners and undercoat peeling off....i did a k5 blazer "rrrrrust bucket" like this and it really held up. Best part is its cheap and easy, and easy to touch up if you ever need to.

I never said por15 was undercoating, ive tried it, reminded me if parkerizing a gun, which is good. I thought rust bullet was a better product. Both are a pita to properly apply with needed prep. Both are good with proper prep.
That said, the cost and time of por15 or rust bullet vs cost and time of rustoleum makes rustoleum better imo. When used w rusty metal primer and at least 3 coats of paint ive had great results so long as all the loose rust is removed. Cheaper and easy to touch up if ever needed.
