engine codes p0171, p0174

1998 Ford F-150, 4.2

Engine light came on. Began idling rough.

I took it to service station. Mechanic pulled codes and said it was 02 sensor. I went home to look it up in Haynes manual...discovered there are 4 O2 sensors.

Took truck to friend who had OBD-II scanner...pulled codes again. Came back with p0171 and p0174...fuel too lean.

Cannot find how to fix this.

I appreciate any help!

I would look for a vacuum leak and maybe try cleaning the Mass Air Sensor. Usually if you need to replace the o2 sensors, it is the ones in front of the convertors nearest the engine. The rear ones are there to verify that the cats are working.

Cleaned mass air flow sensor. Disconnected battery for 30 minutes.

The check engine light went off for about a week, then came back on again. The engine still idled rough.

I finally dropped it off at the mechanic I use. He found a vacuum leak (which I couldn't find...I tried by listening...is there a better way?!).

Total cost to replace elbow and tube, scan, and clear codes: $65. Much less than changing out the 02 sensors!

I was pleased!

thanks for those of you that tried to help me out!
