I have a 1995 f350 7.3 I'm getting a squeaking noise from under the hood I'm not sure if it's the water pump going the fan won't rock back and fourth how else can I tell if the water pump is bad
Could be the clutch fan or idler pulley is making noise. Usually a water pump failure shows signs starting with gradual coolant loss from the weep hole out the bottom of the pump near the shaft. If the truck sits in place while running for a few minutes, are you getting a little puddle of coolant under the engine compartment?
Water pumps generally leak water when they go bad. Most underhood squeaking noise is caused by bad idler or tension pulley bearing. Loosen the belt and check each one for wobble or roughness. They should spin smooth with no play in them.
If your serpentine is older at all. Gatorback to replace it. I thought my belt was fine and hunted a noise forever until it turned out to be the belt itself.
I agree. Water pumps don't normally squeak, they start to grumble and leak.
Get a long screwdriver or specific listening tool and carefully poke around. It won't take long to isolate.
