I just bought 2002 7.3L F 350 superduty with 227,000 miles on it. I recently did the ball joints at a friend's shop got it back together and went to drive away when then check engine light came on. I backed up and my buddy who is a diesel mechanic but primarily works on Cummins was still out side and grabbed his obd 2 scanner to see if we could figure out what the code was. The truck was still running good at this point but the light was still on. I had the truck running and he plugged in the obd 2 scanner and the truck immediately developed a surge in the idle. Now the strange thing that has me stumped is that when the check engine light is on the truck it runs good no surge but when the light goes off the surge begins. I guess what my real question is could the PCM have been damaged when the obd scanner was hooked up when the truck was started and could this be why the obd port is not working??
AN OBD II scanner will not work on there trucks, even though it has the right shape. I have had mine surge when trying to read codes and it not cause any permanent issues so I doubt it did any permanent harm.
Well, if the key was on and/or the truck was running at the time that it was plugged in then that is generally not a good idea. The scanners that I have used require that the engine is off and key is off prior to plugging in. Most suggest that the key is removed from the ignition.
There are a few people on here who have learned the hard way...
The other factors that I forgot to mention in the opening post was that the truck also has an edge tuner in it. I'm not sure that this makes a difference.
Will the truck crank and then run at this point. If so, I doubt the PCM is fried.
Try removing the Edge tuner...with the key off, out of the ignition, and preferably in your pocket. Then try cranking it again. Is it the old style Edge that is about 3.5" x 1.5"?
I just went through a period of about 2 years where my old PCM was slowly giving up the ghost and then lost all of its' magic....had the PCM/IDM code off and on and then continuously until it would no longer run.
Ya the truck will run but I think the glow plugs are not working because it wouldn't start this a.m was about 45 degrees out. When it is started the check engine light goes off and on, truck runs good when the light is on which I'm assuming is some kind of safe mode and surges at idle when the light is off. The edge is an older one I can try to unhook the tuner and try to run then post results after.
