I have a 2002 ranger and the plexiglass front is cracked, how do I go about disconnecting the speedo and the rest of the guages in order to replace this. And if I disconnect the speedo am I doing something illegal? Will is effect my truck in some way if I do not reconnect it before I drive it again? Reason I ask is I will need to drive the truck to the dealer to get the replacement part, and if it is going to cause problems I need to find another means. Also while I'm at it, is there a way to tell if your speedo has been rolled back? I bought a 2002 ranger here in the last week and the milage reads 1348........... pretty low for a 2002! I just want to make sure its REALLY that, seeing how I have a cracked lense I am wondering?!?!?!?!!
Check to see if you're still under warranty- they might do it for you for free. If not, I think you can just replace the plexiglass covering . Order the part and after you have it in your hands THEN start taking apart the panel. Here's a link about instrument panel light bulb replacement- the steps are going to be the same for replacing your plexiglass panel. It is a lengthy process, but not overly complicated. Good luck.
There isn't a mechanical speedometer cable connection like you
are probably used to. The speedometer is driven electrically
from the PCM. On my 1999 there is 2 electrical connectors on
the back of the instrument panel.
Thanks Looks pretty easy to get the cluster out and replace the galss. I just hope I don't break anything in the process. How about the rolling back of the miles? Is that possible that somebody could have done that? IF they had left a connection undone for a period of time would that have done it, and how can I tell if somebody has done this? Oh call me stupid, but what is PCM stand for?
anythings possible when it comes to the miles on the truck. maybe you can get the service records from the dealership where the truck was serviced. you can check the odometer reading off the repair orders. also, look for signs of obvious wear that might indicate the truck has more than 1348 miles. PCM stands for Powertrain Control Module.
Under the circumstances..that's a question I would have been asking begore I bought the truck. Get a carfax..might cost you 10 or so dollars but it may be well worth it.
