Hi guys, well I just bought a real great looking 79 f250 with a manual 4 speed in it. Unfortunately the only thing that hadn't been restored in it is the engine and the engine compartment. The engine is a straight 6 and I want to swap it with (of course) a 460. What all will I have to do to make this swap happen? I don't know what parts I have to get and how many and I really have to watch my budget.
Also the 6 cyl (NP 435) 4 spd is probably a small block bell housing?? You need a big block bell housing off a 351M/400.
Also be aware that there are 460 CAR exhaust manifolds and 460 TRUCK manifolds, and you want TRUCK ones. Car one's will work, but you will have to notch the top of your passenger side frame rail due to the short exit length of the car exhaust manifold.
TransDapt offers engine swap brackets that can either be welded or bolted. You supply the insulators and shells. Summit carries it: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/trd-9433
Other things to think of that may not be obvious...
May have to open up the core support for the larger size radiator
Gas pedal arm.. i'm pretty sure the six cylinder is too long at the firewall. Modify or pirate one.
The L&L kit is expensive but takes all of the guesswork out. Also has warranty and they are good with tech support (for example which starter to use after swap). It was a big help for me.
Be aware the that manual and automatic block plates are different for the 460. Dont make the same mistake I did of figuring that out after you are buttoning up the bell housing.
Just get the 385 series (351m/400/429/370/460) bell housing. That will bolt up. The pivot for the equalizer bar is in the same spot. But you will need the bracket that bolts to the bell. The pivot on your current six is threaded into the block. The driveshaft length should remain the same.
