I have a 1978 f150 4x4 sb with a 351m motor.I was told by certain people that these motors are garbage because of an oiling problem to the bottom end right from the factory!!!!Is this true....and if this is ,how can i rectify the problem?
thx.The Wolfman...
Didnt have a problem with mine... It had over 150k miles on her before I redone it, I Built it pretty good, put a high volume oil pump on it for better oiling because of the rest of mods I done to it... anyway, the oiling systems on the 335 seriers havent been a problem to me nor have I heard stuff bout it..
The 351M and 400 motors seem to be very good motors. There are a few that develop oil pressure problems in high mileage engines but that can happen with any engine.
There are a number of threads here about oil pressure problems with these motors. Try the search function.
Thanks for the info, but when i first start it ,the lifters sound like their not getting oil, they really click bad,but then it goes away! The oil pressure guage goes to about 3/4s when driving and to about half when hot and idling!Any suggestions what this might be!!!!!

Try using some "Rislone" oil treatment to see if you have some varnish etc built up on a lifter or two. I have heard that "Marvel Mystery Oil" has an engine cleaner that might work also.
It sounds like you have good oil pressure, just a couple of lifters that aren't pumping up quick enough.
Use some Valvoline Maxlife oil for a while and Motorcraft oil filters also.
