Has anyone tried the Mid Fifty P/S conversion using their new gear box kit not the Toyota one? If so, how did it work out? Thanks for any info...
Truck in question is a 1955 F100....
Not personally, but I've heard good things about it. FWIU it is made from Isusu design/tooling. Isusu was a tech design partner with Toyota on the era trucks, so the design is very similar. Doesn't require an extra cost conversion mount or pitman arm, and with the rising prices and relative scarcity of used Toy boxes (and especially with the IMHO highly overpriced "rebuilt" boxes) as well as the conversion parts, are becoming a cost effective option. Does anyone know if MF and Classic Haulers has found a new source to build their Toy mounts and pitman arms?
However I have a friend that has bought and tried the very same steering box with a new saginawa style pump from Speedway motors and he have had some issues with metal shaving debris in the system collecting in the pump screen.
If it comes from the pump or the box is not really clear as of today. But he had this problem this spring and after a few cleanings of the screen the shavings have stopped appearing, but he has a very strange acting servo function. When its cold it runs as it should but as soon as it gets hot he looses servo action in some degree and in doesn´t self centering when doing left turns (might have been right)....
He has been driving it this summer to see if it gets any better. Some other users of the CPP 400 series box, on other forums (in other car models) have had similiar issues with it, not that many but a few. CPP has always replaced them on warranty.
I wont be able to test mine within the warranty.......bummer.
But my guess is that the manufacturer have had some issues with cleaning out the milling debris and some of it may get the centre pressure relief valve to get stuck, rendering in the symptom that you loose some of the servo action as the piston is actually leaking some pressure to the other side and in the same way it has problem self centering the steering wheel in one way. Or it may just be a tolerance issue with the pressure relief valve.
Either way all in all it seems like a really good buy.
But I cant really understand that they send a kit with the distance tubes and too short bolts........thats just plain bad, how hard can it be to send correct length bolts.....???
I have no trouble with mine. I bought a Bourgeson pump from a seller on eBay, installed it, and found it leaked at the mating surface between the pump and body on the front of the unit. Common problem with rebuilt saginaw pumps. I emailed the seller, who forwarded the message to Bourgeson, and they sent out a replacement quickly. Very happy with the whole kit, even though the truck isnt being driven yet. Everything seems to be working as it should.
