It takes a special Ford socket, but most normal people don't have one. I used a 1 1/16" socket and pounded it on there with a hammer Wouldn't do that if I was reusing the sensor. maybe you can get an open end wrench on there. Good luck.
It just requires a "sending unit" socket, available from a variety of tool vendors. There is more one kind of "sender" socket, but the one you need is the most common and widely available type. That said, I really can't recommend buying one. Even a pro mechanic will use one only rarely unless he's an engine builder or something.
I commonly remove them through gentle use of vise grips. I bought the socket, but since I only need it maybe once a year of course it can't be found until I DON'T need it. Then it's constantly in the way.
You may have a deep well socket that fits closely enough to get it off. Usually you only need a tool to break it loose or do the final tightening. Other than that, fingers are best.
