I have a 1990 F150 XLT Lariat with the 4.9 l straight 6. It is a 5 speed manual. I have had the ignition problem where the key does not engage far enough to start the engine. I had taken the cover off the shaft where I could use pliers to engage the link to start it. Mine is intermittent where it will sometimes work, but most of the time it will not work.
I bought the replacement piece to do the repair. I pulled the steering wheel and got it apart to where I needed to tilt the wheel to access things better. Here is where I ran into a problem. The tilt does not work. I always thought I had tilt, but this made me question it. I have not used the tilt in years. The turn signal handle pushes forward like it would need to do to work the tilt. I also thought the XLT Lariats where equipped with tilt as a standard option.
So, assuming I have tilt, which I think I do, how do I proceed to fix the tilt so I can fix the actuator? Is there a common problem that occurs with the tilt? Is it possible I just do not have tilt?
welcome to FTE.
i have not used the tilt wheel in years also, so i can not tell you id it is pull to tilt or push to tilt.
either way, you will need to pull the tilt pins out to replace the actuator. if i remember correctly, a 2 inch long 8-32 screw screws rite into the tilt pins so you can pull them out.
and watch for the tilt springs, they like to grow wings and fly away once set free.

Thanks for the welcome. I guess I am going to have to dig in and see what I find.
Do you have the lock cylinder out and the collar off of it? If so, post a pic of the column on the left side so I can have a look at it.
I have everything back intact as this is my daily driver right now. I hope to get back in there this weekend, but looking at my schedule it may be the following weekend.
Not a big deal as it works for one crank and then does not work for several more cranks.
