Mark, insurance is a scam- it is simply a state sponsored way for the companies that sell insurance to rob you. That much you already realized...so what to do now ? How about this. puchase a 1/2 ton, 85 or something close. The least exspensive one you can find, doesn't matter if it runs or not. Drill out the rivets that are holding the serial # plate on the door and add it to your 1 ton. Get the 'F150' badges of the hood and fenders too. Then, cut off the sides of the bed on your 1/2 ton, and bolt them on the side of the flatbed. Junk the 1/2 ton remains, and tell the state that you junked the one ton. Then keep your 1 ton till you die and don't ever try to sell it. The state won't figure it out, neither will the CHPs, they aren't that bright. Yeah it is a lot of hassle, but it is probably cheaper than 5K for insurance that fights you to the death if you have to make a claim. DF,@ his Dad's house.
I'm just curious....being from Canada...the lowest amount of Liability I can get is 1Million...2million is an option...Whats standard insurance down there???
When I had my jap scrap it was 1Million Lia. + 300$/deductible on collison/fire all that fun stuff and insurance was 6400$/year
On my truck I just have 1 mil liability and its $1824 /year
I email my senators/congress about insurance and the scam that it is. You must do the same....if not then stop conplaining.
Simply tell the politicians you will vote only for those that are fighting for you.
I pay about $500/year for mine. That's collision, comp, and 500,000 in liability for personal use.
I can't imagine that you would be able to maintain an out of state residence for any less than the insurance. I'd cut my losses, sell it, and buy cheaper. Do that ugly trade-in if necessary. Then again, it's a real buyers market here in NYS right now. Dirt cheap interest rates and dealerships having a hard time moving used vehicles. I was within $300 of retail on my trade and $2500 below retail on the truck according to NADA online. But I don't have a clue what the market is like in California.
$5,000/year in insurance is what keeps me from driving sports cars that I really like. So I can understand how you feel.
up here in Canada we gots it real good EH? In Saskatchewan the vehicle insurance and registration is provided by the government. So the prices are real low.
Heres a list of what I pay for insurance on my vehicles:
1996 Blazer (oopps where did that come from?) $800
1989 F150 $400
1988 Mustang $500
1983 Marquis $400
1965 and 1963 F100s $125
So if you want my opinion, move up to the great not so white north. the air is clean, the people freindly and there is tons of great cheep beer!
Oh and as for coverage you get $200 000 for medical,$200 000 for property damage and each vehicle is given a different apraisal with a $350 deductable. and if you own farm land you get another 10% of your vehicle reg/insurance.
Don't move to ontario sask sounds alright...and if your dog runs away you have about 3 days to catch him before he gets out of site!
We get farm discounts here as well, but we don't have enough property atm for me to try that...soon we are moving out of the city soon its just trying to find something my ma can afford thats not a dump. Alot easier to find something with no property and gorgeous house then something with property and gorgeous house lol.
But seriously I have the MIN!! and I'm paying what some of you guys pay in a year...bah. But still I have the BEST arguement out of anyone I know for when my eco friendly friends rag on me for driving an old truck (Funny thing is I am big into cycling where everyone drives sports compacts and says we need to commute via bike...which I agree with if you live in an urban setting, I'd like to see 90% of the cars out there not there...why do you need to sit in a 120,000$ mercedes in a traffic jam for an hour when you could cycle to work in half the time?!?) my gas + insurance is still cheaper then my acura gas + insurance. (not to mention repairs...those cars hold up to people who drive them nice but I broke it quite a bit, my truck hasn't failed me in the year I've owned it)
But anyway I wonder if thats good? In canada big law suits are rare (our gov't doesn't let peopel get away with mulit-billion dollar amb. chasing) but 1mil. liability is min. and it does keep you pretty secure, used to be 500,000$ my ma said. I heard they may be upping it to 2Mil.
There is no actual minimum in Saskatchewan, but having lots does not hurt. But one million is a little over kill because 99.998% of the time your are going to hit a deer not a person and the deer hardly ever sue
