Question Thermostat ?

The weather here in the northwest has been hotter than . My 390 has been running at the upper end of the temp. gauge. My question is - if I take out the thermostat what would the results be, and would that cause any damage?

Thanks,

Thermostat ?

Some cars can actually run hotter with no thermostat. You might get your radiator cleaned out. A shroud on the radiator is a good idea.

Thermostat ?

Yes, you need a thermostat. When it is wide open the orifice meters the coolent in the system. With no thermostat the coolent flows too fast through the radiator. This doesn't allow enough time for the heat transfer to happen. Also, the orifice allows a little backpressure to build for the waterpump. Without the backpressure, the waterpump impeller will cavitate at a much lower rpm. If you don't run a thermostat at least put in some kind of restrictor with the same size hole in it's place.
