hey guys, i gotta 79/2wd/302 man that smokes when ya fire it up and while driving thru the exhaust, This weekend i was gonna tear the valve covers off and do some cleaning, and replace the gasket, now the PO work, was horrible to say the least so there is oil everywhere. By cleaning i mean get a vaccum and clean all the old grimed up oil and the drain holes, anything i should do while the valve covers are off? thanks a ton

im really hoping, but i have a feeling its the piston rings, heck the motor is almost 40 years old. Is even worth looking at taking the valve covers off and replacing the cork gasket? Ive been thinking of just getting another engine and swapping, but idk, i kinda got this truck to dig in and figure out.

if the valve cover gasket is leaking its pretty easy to replace the gasket but if its not i wouldnt bother it, you could always rent a compression tester that threads into the spark plug holes and crank the motor over to see how the compression is and how worn the rings are
