So while under my truck this weekend investigating the flex plate and transmission leaks I realized I was missing a crossmember.
I researched it today and it looks like this is crossmember #2 5025. I suppose it was cut out as one could not remove the swapped in C4 from underneath and this could not get it out without taking the whole motor out.
I assume this is a pretty big deal. I've mentioned before the sloppiness of the truck which has improved with the rebuilt steering column but still not as good as jowilker's. Would this have an affect on that?
How can I fix it?? I read on 66 these should be bolted in so why the heck cut it out???
A few pics. It does look like there is a bolt up top too but it looks like it is riveted to radius arm bracket. Of course I might not know what I am talkin about.

Would this have an affect on that? Missing cross member would most definitely have an affect.
How can I fix it?? Since it's missing, the only 'fix' is to find one and install it.

Lower pic:
#3: 6A023 is the rear engine support bracket that some people call a cross member. It bolts to the frame rails, but I don't know if #25025 was bolted or riveted on.
They were riveted for the smaller 3 spd., bolted for the auto that would not come out without pulling the engine. I had my C6 rebuilt and then installed with the new rebuilt engine. Shortly afterwards it needed to go back to the tranny shop and they had to remove the rivets to get the C6 out.
Thanks Bill. I will check out those sources. I hope flashback has it as they are only an hour from me and it's a good excuse to go see what else they have.
John I am guessing that is what happened with mine as well. Although who knows if PO did it or someone prior to that.
Tis a shame that the PO was not a member here, them maybe he would not have left you with such a mess.
John
Or it's a shame I hadn't done more research and looked at all this stuff before I bought it.
In my previous car buying experience crawling under to make sure everything was actually there didn't cross my mind. Welcome to the world of old vehicles. I bought this to learn things and at least that part is working out!
Oh and I checked with Green Sales, they don't actually have the part. $120 shipped from NOS. Haven't talked to Flashback yet and I have asked a guy in the marketplace here about a 65 part out he is doing.

EBay was definitely a steal. Flashback wanted $140 + shipping.
So when I go to replace this crossmember, is there anything I need to be aware of as far as jackstands at a specific point? My guess is there is a slight twist outwards on the frame now which would explain the alignment issues and very bad inner front tire wear. Any suggestions on how to get it lined up properly?
Also, as I have to remove the rivets that go to the radius arm brackets, probably a good time to do those bushings? Anything else while I am in the area?
Matt, That is crazy, you need to go yarding bro. EZ Auto Sales & Salvage Llc 1400 Phelps Rd Hillsborough, NC 27278 (919) 732-2481 is closest to you. I just Google Mapped that address and there weren't as many vehicles there as there once was. There is 2 or 3 yards on Harvest St in Durham,
You might be able to get one for $10.00. Pull one from an automatic and have everything for your truck.
ND are there any bolt hole differences in bolt pattern 65-79 for the cross member? Also should be able to grab a tape measure and map the bolt holes.
John, I hear ya, but the $50 for a new part from the Uhaul place is a good enough time/money balance for me. Even if I could find one for $10 at one of those three places, depending on how long it took to find it and get it out, I'd rather just pay $50. I barely have enough time to work on it at this point.
Undoing the mess that the previous owner left can be a royal pain. Have a couple cases of that this year but the first one is un-done and the way I want it now.

I have one thing to ask, come back here and tell this group that it arrived at your house for $50.00 when it arrives. I bet shipping will be more than that.
