Hi, I see some of you are using some type of calculator to determine hp... could you help me out?
I currently have an abused 360FE that over the winter will have the following:
I'll change the crank and rods-
It will become a 390 bored .30 over.
600cfm 4bbl carb
edlebrock performer intake
K&N High Flow Filter
Headers
stock compression? (can you tell me the diff numbers from truck -vs- automobile compressions?)
One of the following cams probably:
Performance Cam(?)
218/218 DURATION @.050
284/284 ADV. DURATION
528/528 LIFT
CENTERLINE 110
=OR=
RV Torque Cam(?)
204/214 DURATION @.050
282/292 ADV. DURATION
486/512 LIFT
centerline? (not even sure what that means).
Also what do you guys (and ladies?) think of something like this - is it quality enough for a rebuild or junk?
I don't know anything about the particular cam included in this "Master Rebuild Kit" or I'd have you look at those specs.
I just want to make a solid 250+ hp from this engine - if it comes out more - great, since it's in a 4X4 with an auto and not the lightest truck in the world. Right now as bad as it's running, I bet it's not pushing 150hp...

In my opinion neither of those cams are what you are looking for. Take a look at the Crane 343901 cam. It is one of the best for waking up a mildly modified 390. The cams you mention are from Crower and Comp Cams if I am correct. If you look at the bottom one you will see that the difference between the advertised duration and the .050 duration is quite large. With stock heads you will get best results with a dual pattern cam. If you install 1.66" exhaust valves and do some port work on the exhaust side the single pattern might be the way to go. The truck engine compression were usually lower than the car. The cars were usually 9.0:1 or above and the trucks were below. There is no difference in the blocks or potential of the two. The opening price on that kit you listed doesn't look too bad and the parts are quality. I would seriously consider another cam though. The one in the kit is probably stock. The lifters from the kit could be used with the new cam though so you are only talking about $120. This should put you close to 300HP with tons of low end grunt. I'm not sure how much compression the H304P piston will yeild though.
the crane definately got mine moving i would recommend it definately, but with the lift it has its probably a good idea to go ahead and get the springs as well

Thanks for the thoughts on the cams. I was curious about those as well - they seemed to be more along the 'bargain' type of deal line. I'd rather do it right the first time and get the decent hp and torque numbers.
I do have a question though - when you say mild porting of the head what are you talking about? In my area there are some stock car engine builders that could probably increase the flow, but when is too much flow too much? What I mean is this - is the stock head too restrictive so that it will increase to a certain point? Or can it be over ported and will I see the engine losing bottom end and midrange because it's been "hawged out" too much (as they like to say here in the mountains of Georgia).
