Just picked up an 84 E350 motorhome with the 460ci V8 for the low low price of "get it running and it's yours". Put a new ignition module in it and got it home. Woo! Now the problem is, it's been sitting for 5 years and something is up with the fuel system. Drained the old gas, filled with premium and runs awesome until you get up to a good speed, then you loose all power and it starts sputtering/backfiring. Weird thing is, if you switch between the front and rear tanks every 10 seconds you can get enough fuel to run constant at 60mph. But it is... REALLY annoying. Any ideas? I'm thinking fuel pump is shot but wanted a second opinion before I start throwing parts at it. Also does anyone know if an 84 has a mechanical or electric fuel pump? Thanks!
Hi alibabu22,
I got my dad's 88 model 302 with dual tanks after it mostly sat for 10 years. Same symptoms, ran great up to highway speeds the it felt like it ran out of gas. When I pulled the tanks down, the filter sock was covered with some white calcium looking stuff. I replaced both pumps and the main filter and it runs 80 MPH all day. The photo shows just a small area right under the pump motor that is clear. jim
You will have to check the side of the engine block drivers side near the front of the block to find out if you have an electric pumps or not.
My 83 RV did not have electric fuel pumps and no fuel filter on the frame. Only a fuel selector solenoid valve on the frame.
But some have installed an after market fuel filter on on the fuel line.
The carburetor will have a fuel filter screwed into it if you have electric pumps or not.
If you have electric pumps you will have motorized fuel selector fuel valve mounted on the frame but no fuel filter on the frame but as I said above some have added a filter somewhere along the fuel line. You will also have a "T" in the fuel line right in front of the carburetor for the hot fuel (vapor) return to the the fuel tanks.
If you do not have electric pumps you may have a vapor locking problem.
