Ahh I see. Im surprised that wasn't done when they did all this engine work. Should I do this after checking if I have straight up timing or before?

Give this a read

Should I do this after checking if I have straight up timing or before?
I would do both at the same time if you can otherwise you'll be fine tuning the motor twice ..

If you're not running EGR, you may need to back off the advance a bit to avoid knock (with EGR, the timing is more advanced to make up for the lower flame speeds). If it's not knocking under load though, I wouldn't worry about that level of detail for now.

You said it was running OK when the vacuum line was off the carb, meaning you may've had a vacuum leak at the time? Could it be that you tuned the idle mixture to compensate, and it's off now that the leak is corrected? Is the problem only at idle (running OK off-idle), or is it problematic everywhere?

Ya I got that. I didn't know that the lack of a EGR would effect the vacuum advance. I cant imagine that they had all this work done and didn't address a serious issue with the vacuum advance.

I tuned it with the vac adv on for the carb idle screws. It fell off somewhere while driving. I cant remember it running bad after I finished the carb tuning but now it is with the vac on. Very strange.

I'm really kind of excited about your project because I've been seeing van 4x4 rolling chassises coming up for sale and would alwais pass because I thought the bodies we're limited to 73-79 .. Now that I know the bodies til 91 will fit it makes a project like that a lot more doable .. The wife and I like to do back country camping and a 4x4 van is the ticket with a high single axle trailer

and its 75 to 91. pre 74 was unibody. Its obviously better to get as late as possible for newer metal and less wear. 92+ is absolutely way too much work to fit on a pre 91 so that's out the door.

Where you live you should have no problem getting goood metal .. I flew to Portland to buy my 87 F350 crewcab and drove it home to western Pa.
I was really surprised how well sheet metal holds up out there ..

BTW I did the straight up timing set and distributor recurve on my 87 F350 460 crew ..
1) I got better and more power where I needed it
2) better throttle response
3) better gas mileage

Ya I know the benefits. Luckily someone had already done that on my 85. That truck runs great and has almost an identical setup as the van.
