2002 front axle/CV

So I'm pulling out my front CV/half shafts to replace leaking seals, both sides. As long as I have them out, is there a way to dis-assemble them for inspection or otherwise determine if they need to be replaced? They are the the originals on a 2002 with 220k miles. I haven't noticed any problems such as clunking or clicking but was wondering if there's anything else to check.

I see you have 68 reads & no replies, so if no takers here, maybe pose the question in the drive line forum here, bet someone there has some useful info. Clutch, Transmission, Differential, Axle & Transfer Case - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums

Thanks Pawpaw, I think you're right, that would have been better to post there. It worked out fine. I disassembled the CV's and inspected them, got them cleaned up and repacked with grease. I was amazed how good condition they were in for the mileage, needle bearings looked great, very minor wear in the lobes. Unfortunately the excluder seals were shot so I'm waiting on some of those to arrive in the mail before I can put everything back together.

OK, good to hear it seems you have a good grip on the subject. I know just enough about the 4X4 front end to be dangerous!!!!

that would be some pictures I would be interested in seeing.
I would say that if there was no problem, or noise issue with the half shaft, to just leave them and continue.
But since you've gone ahead, good work.
Were any special tools needed to open the half-shafts?
Are you talking about the driveshaft or the axle shaft from the differential out to the wheel?

If I remember I'll take pictures when I take the second one apart. Only special tool I needed was a snap ring pliers. There's no snap rings but there is a spring clip which the pliers seemed to be the best improve to remove it. This is for the CV/axle shafts going into each side of the front diff, the seals on each side of the diff were leaking for a few months, finally decided to do something about it.
