Hi I am having an issue with my dash lights on my 05 F350 SD. My oil & fuel gauge area on the left side of my dash does not light up anymore all of the other lights & needles light up okay. I suspect that probably the bulbs could be burned out I have been looking for a video on how to properly inspect/change them out. I learned that there are 14 of those bulbs back there is that true? I want to put in all new ones while it is all open. ( local independent shop wants over $300.00 to do the job) has anybody tackled this job before? I would sure like to not spend the $300.00.
Don't do that.
There is a good video online at Circuit board medics that shows you how to remove the instrument cluster. It only takes minutes. then you can change out the bulbs.
It make it easier if you unplug the two switches on the left of the steering wheel once you pulled the cover.
Very easy to do.
disconnect the battery's
Watch the video.
Pull the instrument cluster, install the bulbs
put it back.
Shouldn't take you more then a half hour to do the whole thing, little more if you're having a Brew
Thanks I will try to do that bulb replacement myself sounds easy just a little afraid to work on my newer expensive vehicles I have a classic 60's ford collection & heck they are easy & not complicated parts are cheaper too
Well I got it done ( took 2 attempts) one due to did not get auto trans indicator snapped in all the way 2nd after testing another bulb blew out Things I learned to make it easy that the video did not cover
remove bottom fuse panel cover
loosen the 2 bolts that hold the steering column 13mm (this gives you that extra bit of clearance that you need when just leaving the trim piece still hooked up to the switches)
Bulbs are not readily available cluster takes 14 @ $12.00 ea. from ford
Napa can get a 5 pack from Dorman #18248-05250919 at $9.00 ea. but you need to take the Dorman bulb & USE THE FORD SOCKET! the Dorman socket will not work right with the ford cluster it will not lock in properly. Anyway I did it and now it works great! This was a very good learning experience for me I hope that some of my info is helpful to the next guy who needs to do this Having 2 well deserved tall boy brews right now. Thanks to this great forum there are some really good people on here.
For anyone having similar issues - our standard rebuild includes replacing all of the backlighting (along with many other common failures) for around the same cost as purchasing just the bulbs from your dealership. We also have a LED upgrade for an additional $30. Both great options. We are now also offering exchange clusters for those that can't put their truck down. No programming necessary.
