common problems/issue

Hello All,

I tried the search function for "common problems" and "common issues," but did not get great results, so I wanted to make this post.

I am not currently an Excursion owner, but have been looking for some time. I am waiting to sell my current daily driver, but would like to find a good used Ex in the $10k range. I am specifically looking for the V10. Are there any common problems/issues that I should be on the look out for when looking at used Excursions with 100-150k miles on them? What big ticket maintenance items should have been done with that mileage, or what will be close to failure?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Here are a couple of recent finds if anyone cares to comment:

Cars for Sale: 2001 Ford Excursion Limited in Charlotte, NC 28277: Sport Utility Details - 395030382 - Autotrader

This one I would have to pay to ship, so it is a little more prohibitive from a cost stand point:

Thanks,
Kevin

Let's see Common issues with V-10 are exhaust leaks due to broken manifold studs. Some early V10s had issues with spark plugs blowing out of head due to poor thread engagement. Some suffer from poor fuel mileage, OK all of them, LOL. I have a V10 excursion that I have enjoyed alot. I had the exhaust stud issues, but otherwise a good drivetrain.

Door lock actuators are also a common item that fails over time. $x$ haubs will need to be checked, I replaced mine with manual hubs. As with any other vehicle with this kind of age on it, check the frame good for rust.

There are other items I'm sure but these are Common.

Good Luck
TJ

Excursions come with similar issues to a regular Super Duty.

The V10 is a beast. Tons of torque and will pull a trailer quite well. As mentioned before, all modular motors have a common issue: exhaust manifold bolts breaking off. That's what happens when you put steel studs in an aluminum head... And theyre a beach to replace.

The automatic hubs on mine wont engage on their own. No biggie. I just have to get out and turn the hub to "ON" instead of "AUTO". I am also going to look into some manual hubs in the future

Any gasser is gonna get crap for fuel mileage, but that's the nature of the beast!

Essentially, if you can put gas in it and keep the oil changed, itll run forever

Coil On Plug (COP) they have problems. End up with a "miss" or "flutter" from no Spark / random spark.

Door ajar. The door switches get stuck and the lights will stay on. Spray the switches with oil.

Steering issues, common complaint. ball joints go bad, sway bar bushings, tie rod links, all normal. Some guys (like me) get an aftermarket steering box, dunno how much they help.

Windshield leak. Water can find its way in and cause funny electric issues.

Not to talk you out of the Excursion, we all love 'em. Good luck
